The enterobacterial repetitive intergenic consensus polymerase chain reaction (ERIC-PCR) technique was used for fingerprinting of reference strains and Mexican isolates of Haemophilus paragallinarum. A total of nine ERIC patterns were given by the nine serovar reference strains of this bacteria. Two Modesto (C-2) reference strains from different sources showed the same ERIC pattern. Seventeen ERIC patterns were obtained among 29 Mexican isolates included in the study, belonging to serovars prevalent in Mexico (A-1, A-2, B-1, and C-2). Obtained results indicate that the ERIC-PCR technique could be used as a molecular laboratory tool for subtyping of H. paragallinarum.
The chondriome of the amastigote form of Trypanosoma cruzi was studied by fluorescent microscopy using rhodamine 123 and conventional transmission electron microscopy of serial thick sections. The 3-dimensional models of the chondriome generated from the serial sections using manual or computer-assisted analysis revealed a single circular or horseshoe-shaped mitochondrion in each amastigote studied. The morphology of the amastigote chondriome does not conform to that seen in the epimastigote or trypomastigote forms of T. cruzi. Cell shape and mitochondrial form are comparable for a given morphotype, but they differ between cyclical forms.
Editor's Note: This paper won second place in the original research category of the W. Frederick Sample Student Excellence Award Competition. Multiple allograft duplex sonographic examinations were performed on six patients who underwent pancreas transplantation to determine the role of this imaging modality. Poor correlation was found between gland size, parenchymal echogenicity or resistive index, and either rejection and/or cyclosporine toxicity. The pancreatic duct was not dilated on any of the examinations. Seven peripancreatic fluid collections were noted but were generally small. In one patient, no Doppler frequency shifts were found in spite of extensive interrogation of the parenchyma and subsequent biopsy confirmed allograft infarction. Duplex sonography appears most useful for excluding ductal dilatation, for detecting peripancreatic fluid collections, and for identifying infarction.Pancreas transplantation is a recently advocated surgical method of treating selected patients with Type 1 insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus. Although this procedure has been performed since 1966, recent advances in patient selection, surgical technique, and immunosuppression therapy have From the
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
