In August 2005, the Maxwell Music Library along with several other collections in Howard-Tilton Memorial Library were submerged under nine feet of water due to Hurricane Katrina. While many print items were restored, the sound recording collection was completely destroyed. This article describes our experiences of rebuilding the sound recording collection in terms of collection evaluation, vendor evaluation, and selection. Our experiences in rapidly building a rigorous, comprehensive collection of sound recordings may provide insights into collection development for other libraries seeking to quickly build a robust sound collection as well as assist librarians new to collection development of sound recordings.
