The densities of aqueous solutions of La(NOs)3, Pr(NC>3)3, Nd(NOs)3, Sm(N03)s, Gd(NOs)3, Tb(NOs)3, Dy(NOs)3, Ho(N03)s, Er(NOs)3, Yb(NC>3)3, and Lu(NOs)3 were determined from approximately 0.03 m to saturation at 25°with an accuracy of ±3 X 10-5 g/ml by a pycnometric method. The densities are represented with empirical equations. The apparent molal volumes were fitted to semiempirical equations and partial molal volumes were calculated. The partial molal volume data for the nitrate solutions are compared to the rare earth chloride and perchlorate data. The two-series effect in the partial molal volumes of the rare earth nitrates at infinite dilution, attributed to a decrease in the inner-sphere water coordination of the cation, disappears by 0.5 m. Above this concentration, the partial molal volumes of the rare earth nitrates generally decrease from La(NOs)3 to Lu(N03)3. These results are interpreted in terms of innersphere nitrate complex formation.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
