It has come to our attention that the readout times of the X-ray scans we recorded on station 16.4 of Daresbury laboratory were of the order of 1.9 s, rather than milliseconds, as we had been led to believe. This fact does not alter the time for which each scan was recorded, which remains as stated in the paper (typically 100±250 ms), but it does necessitate other revisions. In Fig. 3, 4 and 5 the run numbers still stand, each having been collected for 0.25 s (Fig. 3 and 4) or 0.1 s (Fig. 5), however a time interval of ca. 1.9 s appears between successive scans. In effect, these were stroboscopically time resolved experiments. The readout time between scans also means (i) that the ultimate time resolution of the experiments was ca. 2 s, (ii) that the intermediates seen in the applied ®eld syntheses were quite long lived at over 10 s, and (iii) that the rates of cool down in the experiments were 5±10 times slower than those reported in the paper.
