Background: Primary Sjogren's syndrome (pSS) is an autoimmune disease that leads to salivary and lacrimal gland dysfunction. The adaptive immune response associated with T helper-2 lymphocytes appears to be altered in these patients. Therefore, the objective of this study was to determine the salivary levels of interleukin (IL)-6, IL-5, and IL-4 in patients with pSS when compared to a healthy control (HC) group. The secondary objectives were to study whether ILs levels in pSS patients were associated with salivary flow, patient-reported outcomes (PROMs) for xerostomia and oral health quality of life (Oral Health Impact Profile-14 [OHIP-14]), pSS classification criteria and presence of extraglandular manifestations. Methods: A case-control study was conducted in 36 patients with pSS and 35 HCs. Cytokine levels were measured using high-sensitivity multiplex map human immunoassays. Unstimulated and stimulated whole saliva were collected and patients filled out questionnaires. The Mann-Whitney U test, chi-squared test, and Spearman correlation test were used. Results: Interleukin-6 was significantly higher in pSS patients than in HCs (P = .0001). IL-6 was significantly higher in pSS patients with a positive salivary gland biopsy
Physical activity contributes to the health and well-being of students because of the physical, psychological, and social benefits it provides (especially during confinement). The objective was to identify the level of physical activity of college students during confinement by COVID-19. It is a descriptive and cross-sectional study conducted from March to July 2020. A population of 931 students enrolled in the Universidad Nacional de Frontera, Sullana-Peru, and a sample of 270 participated. The international physical activity questionnaire (IPAQ) was used. Of the total participants, 32% were men and 68% women, 51% resided in urban areas and 49% in rural areas. The level of physical activity was low in 20% of the students, moderate in 29% and high in 51% of the students respectively. Of the total, 13% were diagnosed with COVID-19, of which 2.6% had low levels of physical activity, 5.2% moderate and 5.5% high. 28.1% of the students had physical complaints associated with COVID-19 symptoms. It is concluded that during the confinement, the university students presented a high level of physical activity, mostly women from rural areas rather than urban areas, where the level of physical activity was low.
Some microorganisms are responsible for food spoilage and foodborne infections worldwide. These microorganisms are becoming increasingly resistant to degradation or inhibition due to exposure to antibiotics, antifungal, and antiparasitics, posing a growing threat to human health. The aim of this study was to describe the antimicrobial properties of compounds present in Myrciaria dubia (pulp, seed, peel, and leaves) against bacteria (Staphylococcus spp., Escherichia coli, Salmonella and others), yeasts (Candida albicans and Saccharomyces cerevisiae) and parasitic protozoa (Leishmania amazonensis and Plasmodium falciparum). Different papers published in the main databases (Scopus, ScienceDirect, PubMed, Wiley Online Library, as well as in university repositories) were reviewed. These results were analyzed and organized according to their inhibitory activity, attributable metabolic actions of this plant, mainly based on its phenolic compounds present (rhodomyrtone, isomyrtucommulone B, myrciarone B, trans-resveratrol, 2.4-dihydroxybenzoic acid, myricetin, syringic, ellagic acid and casuarictin), which can inhibit the synthesis or destabilize the microbial membrane, nucleic acids, cell walls in bacteria and mitochondrial dysfunction in protozoa
Ascorbic acid deficiency has been associated with several health conditions. The objective of this study was to evaluate the content of ascorbic acid and the sensorial qualities of Mangifera indica and Myrciaria dubia yogurts. Four yogurt treatments were elaborated with different concentrations of these fruits (T1: 15% and 5%; T2: 15% and 10%; T3: 20% and 5% and T4: 20% and 10%) respectively, compared with a control treatment (CT: yogurt with 15% of Fragaria vesca). The ascorbic acid contents of the different treatments were determined by spectrophotometry, with values in the following order (T1: 63.2 mg/100 g; T2:114.3 mg/100 g; T3: 57.3 mg/100 g; T4: 115.1 and the control treatment CT:11.5 mg/100 g). The sensorial evaluation consisted of the application of a hedonic scale of 5 points (1: I dislike it very much; 2: I dislike it; 3: I neither like it nor dislike it; 4: I like it; 5: I like it a lot), results show evidence that the acidity level had a significant influence during the sensory evaluation. Treatment (T3) showed the greatest preference. The use of Mangifera indica and Myrciaria dubia in the treatments studied ensured ascorbic acid concentrations compared to the control treatment. This was significantly appreciated by consumers when the percentage of Myrciaria dubia was less than 10% of the total mass of the yogurt.
El emprendimiento ha tenido un crecimiento a nivel mundial y en Perú no ha sido la excepción. Los storytelling son una técnica para transmitir mensajes de tal manera que cautiven y capten la atención de las personas e impulsen a vivir la experiencia narrada. La presente investigación busca describir los emprendimientos artesanales de cerámica de la Encantada, Chulucanas, Perú, desde la técnica del storytelling. Se realizó una investigación acción, con enfoque cualitativo de carácter exploratorio de diseño no experimental. Las técnicas utilizadas fueron la encuesta y la entrevista. Mediante un muestreo no probabilístico por conveniencia e intencional, se seleccionaron 3 emprendedores a los cuales se les aplicó storytelling. Se concluye que, los emprendimientos de La Encantada han transmitido el legado de Max Inga y Gerónimo Sosa, destacándose por la técnica de paleteo y el decorado en negativo de la cerámica. Comunicar la historia de estos emprendedores conserva la identidad de la cultura de esta comunidad, e impulsa a visitar para conocer a los protagonistas.
