The authors of the present edited volume analyze some key aspects of ethnopolitical dynamics in the contemporary European countries. The authors draw attention to such issues as the role of ethnicity in the European political order, problematic classification of ethnic minorities, the crisis of the nation-state model, integration and disengagement measures aimed at external migrants, transformation of the right-wing anti-immigrant populism. The special focus of the book is the regional cases of practical ethnopolitical management, with evidence taken from Northern Ireland, Nagorno Karabakh, Ukraine, and the Balkans. The authors show that ethnicity retains its role as one of the most important sources for political mobilization in Europe, and ethnopolitical management is still one of the key aspects of state policies.

The United Kingdom left the European Union on January 31, 2020. On December 31, 2020, the transition period ended, during which all EU rules and regulations applied to Britain. The trade agreement was reached in record time, but it is too early to talk about long-term mutual benefits. The British case in the system of trade and economic agreements of the European Union is unique. On the one hand, at the time of the negotiations, the UK retained EU law, was a member of the EU Single Internal Market and Customs Union, subject to the jurisdiction of the EU Court of Justice. On the other hand, the EU for the first time found itself in a situation when a third country was determined to distance itself as much as possible from EU rules while concluding a trade agreement, despite the obvious economic losses. At the same time, both sides understood that the absence of an agreement threatened all interested actors with serious losses, and that it must be concluded. As a result, the compromise text of the TCA reflects the fundamentally different approaches of the parties to bilateral cooperation, and its provisions suggest a change of its format in the future.

The article is devoted to the analysis of current relations between the European Union and the United Kingdom, as well as the possibilities for creating a closer partnership. The article considers three areas of mutual interest for the parties – the preservation of the EU regulatory framework in British law, cooperation in Northern Ireland and the development of trade relations. The author comes to the conclusion that the presence of objective prerequisites for the creation of a new integration format does not automatically lead to its implementation. On the contrary, the ruling elite of Britain is aimed at maximum distance from the EU rules, which is expressed, in particular, in the consistent change of the Union legislation preserved in national law and the desire to abolish specific regulation in Northern Ireland. Special attention is paid to the situation around the implementation of the Northern Ireland Protocol and the British bill, which cancels its effect unilaterally. The author concludes that instead of a unique integration format and the prosperity of the region, the parties may, in extreme cases, come to a state of trade war and exacerbate contradictions within Northern Ireland.
