Sperm collection in combination with artificial insemination or in vitro fertilization is a common and widely used assisted reproduction technique (ART) in animal and human reproduction medicine. These techniques are mostly complemented with semen cryopreservation, which allows to bridge gaps in time and space between semen donors and recipients. To preserve and distribute valuable genetics, ART may support conservation programmes for endangered and threatened species. Although successfully applied in bovine for decades, artificial insemination with cryopreserved semen is not always successful in other species due to the diverse reproductive systems. In felid species, artificial insemination with cryopreserved semen requires surgical techniques which allow depositing male gametes deep in the female genital tract (Chatdarong, Axner, Manee-In,
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
