The new depsidones subnorstictic acid (1,4,10-trihydroxy-8-methyl-3,7-hepty1)-11 H-dibenzo[b, e] [1,4]dioxepin-1 l o n e ] (8) and di-0-methylphysodic acid [3,8-dimethoxy-11-0x0-1-(2'-oxoheptyl)-6-pentyl-11H-dibenzo[b,e][1,4]dioxepin-7-carboxylic acid] (15) have been identified in lichen extracts.

Treatment of the enediones (I) with excess iBu3Al, depending on the molar ratio (I):iBu3Al chosen and on the temp., affords mixtures of the 15α‐ and 15β‐ols (II) and (III) or of the 9α,15α‐ and 9α,15β‐ols (IV) and (V) in one step.

The new tridepsides 3-hydroxyumbilicaric acid (4) and 3-methoxyumbilicaric acid (5) have been detected in the lichen Parmelinopsis bonariensis and the structures established by unambiguous synthesis.
