Purpose -The purpose of this paper is to describe the open access and open source movement in the digital library world. Design/methodology/approach -A review of key developments in the open access and open source movement is provided. Findings -Open source software and open access to research findings are of great use to scholars in developing nations. Originality/value -This paper provides useful information about software for institutions introducing digital library concepts.
PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to report on a study of the institutional repositories (IRs) in use in Indian universities and research institutes.Design/methodology/approachRepositories in various institutions in India were accessed and described in a standardised way.FindingsThe 20 repositories studied covered collections of diverse types. Most of these collections have unique content.Originality/valueThe goal of this study is to study the IR software and data based on the content type, metadata and characteristics. The paper also describes the collections and some important observations from this study.
Purpose -Aims to share the experience of the design of digital library in relation to digitise of database and making use of user community with a view to give an efficient library practice. Design/methodology/approach -Presents a case study approach to the design of digital library service to provide insight in to the development of online resources. Findings -Important services like online resource, online public access catalogue (OPAC), consortium and how these sources are helpful in building digital collection in Indian Statistical Institute Bangalore library are discussed. Practical implications -In a short period, considerable progress has been made in consortium project in the Indian Statistical Institute libraries. To meet the vision of the academic environment, the library has set up in place strategies that will enable it to provide new information services by which more users of the institution will benefit. Originality/value -Gives an introduction to the digitations of the Indian Statistical Institute Library, Ban galore. Focuses on the key initiatives of the various databases.

India has the legacy of Susrutha and Charaka, its ancient medical practioners but the scholarly literature on modern medicine is scanty. The bibliographic work carried out by Dr John Shaw Billings is unmatched. Due to his contribution the Index Medicus (now-MEDLINE) stands as the most important database of biomedical literature. The services of MEDLINE were extended to all countries over the years and India had its services through MEDLARS Centre at NIC. The coverage of Indian medical literature in MEDLINE was not comprehensive and this affects visibility of Indian medical research output. So Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) launched IndMed and MedInd. There are no studies investigating the coverage, the services and the gaps in coverage of IndMed. This study seeks to assess the extent of Indian medical journals covered by the IndMed comparing the list of medical and allied sciences journals covered by Indian Science Abstracts. Suggestions are made as to how the IndMed can improve its coverage.
