Knowledge of crystal growth rates and the factors that affect these rates is often an essential prerequisite for designing industrial processes that yield a desired crystalline product. Herein, the effects of saturation temperature, supersaturation, and seed‐crystal size on the overall linear growth rate of L‐alanine were examined by using a cone‐shaped fluidized‐bed cell. For a systematic investigation, a “design of experiment” approach was applied that used a two‐level full‐factorial design. It was found that the interaction effects of the three factors mentioned above play a considerable role in interpreting the effect of each individual factor on the growth rate. These interaction effects must be considered when gaining knowledge of crystal growth for the purpose of process design.
