A c c e p t e d m a n u s c r i p t remote sensing and will make measurements on spatial scales of less than 10 km for 57 major elements during solar flares, sufficient to isolate surface landforms, such as craters 58 and their internal structures. The spatial resolution achieved by MIXS-T is made possible 59 by novel, low mass microchannel plate X-ray optics, in a Wolter type I optical geometry. 60 61 MIXS measurements of surface elemental composition will help determine rock types, 62 the evolution of the surface and ultimately a probable formation process for the planet. In 63 this paper we present MIXS and its predicted performance at Mercury as well as 64 discussing the role that MIXS measurements will play in answering the major questions 65 about Mercury. 66 67
Abstract. CCD and CMOS imaging technologies can be applied to thin tissue autoradiography as potential imaging alternatives to using conventional film. In this work, we compare two particular devices: A CCD operating in slow scan mode and a CMOS-based Active Pixel sensor, operating at near video rates. Both imaging sensors have been operated at room temperature using direct irradiation with images produced from calibrated microscales and radio-labelled tissue samples. We also compare these digital image sensor technologies with the use of conventional film. We show comparative results obtained with 14 C calibrated microscales and 35 S radiolabelled tissue sections. We also present first results of 3 H images produced under direct irradiation of a CCD sensor operating at room temperature. Compared to film, silicon-based imaging technologies exhibit enhanced sensitivity, dynamic range and linearity.
We present the development and prototype test of the LPD instrument, a novel pixel detector for the European XFEL. At XFEL the LPD detector must be capable of operating with a frame rate of 4.5MHz and record images with a dynamic range of 1:100,000 photons (12keV) whilst maintaining low noise. The prototype LPD system has a large in pixel memory depth of 512 images that can be selected with a flexible veto system. Data is then transferred off the detector head in between XFEL pulses with an accompanying high rate data acquisition system. The system has been prototyped and assembled into an LPD detector head that contains custom silicon sensors and ASICs as well as a programmable data acquisition cards and supporting electronics and mechanics. A second version of the ASIC has also been submitted for manufacture. The experiences with our first prototype are presented.
