Since the beginning of the development in spring 2005, considerable progress has been made on the BIPM watt balance. We have continued the development of a room temperature experiment to test the feasibility of simultaneous force and velocity measurements. We are now able to simultaneously acquire the velocity and voltage of the moving coil and to deduce their ratio. This article briefly recalls the main ideas of the BIPM watt balance and reports the progress to date and the preliminary results.
On 20 May 2019 a new definition of the SI unit of mass, the kilogram, came into force. The kilogram is now defined based on a fixed numerical value of the Planck constant. This leads to a new situation for mass metrology that in principle every National Metrology Institute can realise the kilogram. To ensure global uniformity, the Consultative Committee for Mass and Related Quantities (CCM) recommended that during an initial phase the dissemination of the kilogram shall be internationally coordinated, by basing it on a socalled 'Consensus Value'. This paper describes the different phases of the dissemination of the kilogram, the determination of the Consensus Value and its impact on national mass scales. The paper concludes with an outlook on future developments of kilogram realisation and dissemination techniques.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
