We discuss the modeling of heterogeneous propellant morphology using a random-pack algorithm, and show that realistic fractions of ammonium perchlorate (AP) can be packed, with realistic particle-size distributions. Propellants defined in this way can be used as the foundation for numerical calculations of burning propellants, and a model which accounts for gas-phase combustion, solid-phase heat conduction, and the unsteady nonuniform regression of the surface, is described. Periodic sandwich propellants are a convenient platform on which to generate the numerical code, and we give some indication of the nature of the solutions in this case. In addition we present some preliminary results for the burning of periodic squares of randomly packed AP discs, which support a 2D combustion field. Kinetic data are determined by fitting to ID experimental data (pure AP, fine AP/binder blend), and in doing this known instabilities are uncovered and we provide some new discussion of this topic 1 .

scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
