The objective of this paper is the development of a new numerical technique for the free vibration analysis of isotropic rectangular and annular Mindlin plates with damaged boundaries. For this purpose, the Chebyshev collocation method is applied to obtain the natural frequencies of Mindlin plates with damaged clamped boundary conditions, where the governing equations and boundary conditions are discretized by the presented method and put into matrix vector form. The damaged boundaries are represented by distributed translational and torsional springs. In the present study the boundary conditions are coupled with the governing equation to obtain the eigenvalue problem. Convergence studies are carried out to determine the sufficient number of grid points used. First, the results obtained for the undamaged plates are verified with previous results in the literature. Subsequently, the results obtained for the damaged Mindlin plate indicate the behavior of the natural vibration frequencies with respect to the severity of the damaged boundary. This analysis can lead to an efficient technique for structural health monitoring of structures in which joint or boundary damage plays a significant role in the dynamic characteristics. The results obtained from the Chebychev collocation solutions are seen to be in excellent agreement with those presented in the literature.
In order to compare numerical and analytical results for the free vibration analysis of Kirchhoff plates with both partially and completely damaged boundaries, the Chebyshev collocation and perturbation methods are utilized in this paper, where the damaged boundaries are represented by distributed translational and torsional springs. In the Chebyshev collocation method, the convergence studies are performed to determine the sufficient number of the grid points used. In the perturbation method, the small perturbation parameter is defined in terms of the damage parameter of the plate, and a sequence of recurrent linear boundary value problems is obtained which is further solved by the separation of variables technique. The results of the two methods are in good agreement for small values of the damage parameter as well as with the results in the literature for the undamaged case. The case of mixed damaged boundary conditions is also treated by the Chebyshev collocation method.
Laminar forced convection of gaseous slip flow in a circular micro-channel filled with porous media under local thermal equilibrium condition is studied numerically using the finite difference technique. Hydrodynamically fully developed flow is considered and the Darcy-Brinkman-Forchheimer model is used to model the flow inside the porous domain. The present study reports the effect of several operating parameters (Knudsen number (Kn), Darcy number (Da), Forchhiemer number ( ), and modified Reynolds number (Re * D )) on the velocity slip and temperature jump at the wall. Results are given in terms of the velocity distribution, temperature distribution, skin friction (C f Re * D ), and the Nusselt number (Nu). It is found that the skin friction is increased by (1) decreasing Knudsen number, (2) increasing Darcy number, and (3) decreasing Forchheimer number. Heat transfer is found to (1) decrease as the Knudsen number, or Forchheimer number increase, (2) increase as the Peclet number or Darcy number increase.
