This paper explores the literature related to the history and traditions of contemporary nurses' uniforms. It also presents the views of nurses about uniforms following the abandonment of a prescribed uniform for nurses working in a Professorial Nursing Unit in a large Hospital in Victoria. The literature dealing with the question of uniforms focuses on professionalism, status and power, infection control, identity, modesty, symbolism and occupational health and safety. The nurses who participated in the study expressed many of these themes.
Medicines make an essential contribution to the health of the community, but rapidly rising drug budgets have caused governments to seek ways of ensuring this expenditure results in value for money. The National Prescribing Service was established against this background to implement a quality use of medicines service as par t of the National Medicines Policy. A range of programmes that attempt to use evidencebased strategies to deliver evidence-based messages have been established. These use multifaceted interventions, such as newsletters, prescriber feedback, clinical audit and educational visiting, that are provided both centrally, through the national office, and locally, through Divisions of General Practice. The work is underpinned by an evaluation strategy that incorporates strong qualitative elements as well as an emphasis on time-series analyses for changes in drug utilization. Some 80% of Australian general practitioners have voluntarily participated in activities such as educational visiting and clinical audit within the National Prescribing Service prog rammes. New programmes for the community and consumers will be coordinated with the work that has become well established within general practice.
This chapter discusses the big five qualitative traditions/designs and others. It is divided into seven sections, and the first section discusses biography design. The types and steps of undertaking projects via biography design are highlighted in detail. The second and third sections address phenomenology and grounded theory designs respectively. The case study design is exposed in Section 4 while historical design is explored in Section 5. Section 6 contains information related to ethnography design. The readers will be able to understand the data collection and analysis procedures related to each and every design and the unique characteristics of the designs are exposed in this chapter. The chapter is concluded by a question and answer section, where important questions are suggested and answered.
