Background: Didactic lecture is one of the most widely accepted methods among teaching and learning methodology. Because of time restriction and vast syllabus to be covered through lectures, feedback knowledge before and after the lectures to assess the extent knowledge of learners gained provides the platform for feedback method to improve the lectures to make it more receptive for students. Aims and Objectives: Aims and objectives were to evaluate the knowledge of didactic lecture among students by giving pre-and post-test questionnaire based evaluation technique. Material and Methods: 2 nd year MBBS students (4 th and 5 th term) after obtaining their consent for voluntary participation, asked to take the pretest containing 10 questions on antiamoebic drugs, and the same 10 questions were provided at the end of the lecture as a post-test questionnaire to assess the effectiveness of the teaching as well as the receptive power of students and their pre-and post-lecture knowledge. Papers were valued on score basis and improvement, data recorded, interpreted, and analyzed. Results: There was significant improvement in the recipient knowledge after post-lecture assessment when compared to pretest. Out of 156 students, only 56 (35.90%) obtained scores between 5 and 8 and 100 (64.10%) were below 5. These scores were improved in post-test by 78.21% (122) obtained scores between 5 and 8, while 21.79% (34) got scores more than 8 indicating the high recipient group reflecting good improvement in cognitive structure. Conclusion: Voluntary participation in such tests provides feedback on teachers teaching effectiveness and adequacy of knowledge gained by learners.
AIM: Self medication with antibiotics has become a common practice among people, and more so among those with medical background. Dentists are one group who have knowledge and accessibility to antibiotics. Hence this study was aimed at knowing the prevalence of self medication with antibiotics among dentists reasons for not visiting the physician. RESULT: Prevalence rate of self medication among dentist was 78.18%. Most common cause for self medication were common cold, tooth ache and sore throat. Most common antibiotic used was azithromycin next to ampicillin. Most common reason for not visiting doctor was that participants were themselves a doctor. CONCLUSION: Though dentists have knowledge about antibiotics, knowledge on appropriate usage of antibiotics is poor. This may have a bad impact on practice. Hence they have to overcome the ego and take proper advice from physician which may help the community in curbing antibiotic resistance The only limitation of the study was small sample size as dentists from only two colleges were considered. There is a need for study in large number of population.
Among the padachatushtaya, medicine is given the next importance after doctor and while highlighting its significance Acharya Charaka has said that doctor equipped with medicine is capable of restoring the health of the individual by removing the fear of disease. In saying this they meant that, the medicine should be of good quality and having maximum potency. ISO 9000 defines quality assurance as "A part of quality management focused on providing confidence that quality requirements will be fulfilled" and is different from quality control. The same has been highlighted in our ancient classics thousands years back. Acharyas mentions about the different parameters to be followed right from collection of raw drug, to processing and storage of final product. WHO have given certain guidelines to ensure the safety and efficacy of the medicine along with its quality control parameters. Following the ancient classics with a touch of scientific reasoning may help in solving the mystery and bringing back the glory of Ayurveda. The drugs used in Ayurveda fall under three categories viz herbal, mineral and animal origin. The collection of drugs include different steps like place, time, method of collection etc. processing techniques include various procedures carried out on the drug, where as storage techniques include different methods of preservation. All these steps involved not only ensure the high potency of medicine but also has a great impact on the preservation and conservation of the environment, thus providing an unending supply for our future demands.
