Human herpes virus-6 (HHV-6) is a DNA virus with two known subtypes A and B. It is unique as its genome integrates into that of humans and is transmitted through the germ cells to the progeny, which is the major mode of vertical transmission (86%) compared to transplacental transmission (14%). 1 Chromosomally integrated HHV-6 (ciHHV-6) is diagnosed by the detection of HHV-6 DNA in hair follicles and/or nail clippings while it will be absent in transplacental infection. 2 We present a neonate who presented in shock after birth, was diagnosed with ciHHV-6Aassociated myocarditis and was successfully treated with artesunate, an antimalarial drug with antiviral properties.
We measured serum levels of 25-hydroxy vitamin D (25(OH) D) in 79 preterm neonates (?32 wk), and correlated it with serum ionized calcium (Ca++) levels at 48-72 h and serum phosphorus and alkaline phosphatase levels at 2-3 weeks of age. The mean (SD) 25 (OH)D level was 14.8 (7.0) ng/mL. 25(OH)D levels had a weak positive correlation with Ca++ (r=0.299) and phosphorus (r=0.186), and a negative correlation with alkaline phosphatase (r=-0.523).
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
