This article presents data from a study examining secondary mathematics teachers’ and science teachers’ implementation of a language of instruction policy in Malaysia, which made English the medium for mathematics and science instruction. It explores the beliefs of math, science and language teachers, and how these beliefs influence their pedagogical practices in content-based language instruction classrooms. The study uses a mixed-methods approach for data collection and data analysis. Data is analysed using perspectives from content-based language teaching (CBLT) and from research on mathematics and science instruction for English language learners (ELLs). The results indicate that teachers’ beliefs about their respective roles as only content teachers or only language teachers limit students’ language learning opportunities. Factors such as curricular requirements, exam pressure and time constraints also shape classroom interactions, and have implications for student learning as well. The findings reveal the lack of collaboration between content and language teachers, and the need for sustained professional development concerning content and language integration for both groups of teachers. This study extends work on content-based language teaching to the previously unexamined Malaysian context. Its findings contribute to the ongoing work of improving instructional practices in content-based classrooms to integrate and maximize content and language learning for English language learners.
Normal mammary gland development requires the coordinated proliferation and morphogenesis of both mammary luminal epithelial cells (LECs) and myoepithelial cells (MECs). Cell proliferation in cultured mammary organoids containing both LECs and MECs is not increased by progestin (R5020) or 17beta-estradiol (E2) alone or R5020+E2 but is increased by E2-regulated, mammary stroma-derived Hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) and further increased by HGF+R5020. We investigated the effects of HGF and/or R5020 on morphology and LEC- and MEC-specific in vitro proliferation in organoids. HGF-induced tubulogenesis was initiated and carried out by LECs starting with cellular extensions, followed by the formation of chains and cords, and culminating in tubule formation. MECs did not appear to have an active role in this process. Whereas HGF by itself caused maximal proliferation of LECs, HGF+R5020 produced a synergistic and specific increase in MEC proliferation. Because only LECs expressed progesterone receptors (PRs), we investigated the role of receptor activator of nuclear factor-kappaB ligand (RANKL), a progestin-induced paracrine factor, in mediating increased MEC proliferation. Quantitative RT-PCR showed that RANKL mRNA was induced by R5020 or HGF+R5020 and RANKL protein colocalized with PRs in LECs. The increased proliferation of MECs in response to HGF+R5020 could be blocked by neutralizing antibody to RANKL and reproduced by treatment with HGF plus exogenous RANKL in place of R5020. Neither R5020, nor exogenously administered RANKL increased proliferation of LECs. These results led us to conclude that RANKL, induced by progestin in PR-positive cells, is secreted and interacts with HGF to specifically increase proliferation of PR-negative MECs.
Objective:To validate EORTC QLQ-C30 and EORTC QLQ-BR23 questionnaires and to measure the health-related quality of life (HRQOL) of women with breast cancer in Singapore during their first 4 years of post-diagnosis and treatments.Methods:A quantitative and cross-descriptive sectional study. All of 170 subjects were recruited in a Singapore tertiary cancer center. The European Organization for Research and Treatment-QOL questionnaire and breast cancer specific module (EORTC QLQ-C30 and QLQ-BR23) were used to measure the HRQOL among women with breast cancer. All statistical tests were performed using SPSS Version 18. The reliability of the EORTC QLQ-C30 and QLQ-BR23 questionnaires was examined using Cronbach's alpha test. EORTC QLQ-C30 was validated against EuroQol Group's 5-domain questionnaires (EQ5D) by examining its concurrent validity using Pearson Product Moment Correlation to calculate the total scores.Results:The Cronbach's alpha coefficient results for EORTC QLQ-C30 and QLQ BR-23 were 0.846 and 0.873 respectively which suggested relatively good internal consistency. The correlation between EORTC QLQ-C30 and EQ5D QOL instruments demonstrated a modest linear relationship (r=0.597; P<0.001) that indicated a moderately strong correlation between the two measures. The study showed that Singaporean women with breast cancer had enjoyed high levels of HRQOL during their first 4 years of survivorship but they had significant concern over the financial impact of breast cancer. One of the key findings was younger women had experienced more physical and psychosocial concerns than older women.Conclusion:The EORTC QLQ-C30 and QLQ-BR23 questionnaires are feasible and promising instruments to measure the levels of HRQOL in Singaporean women with breast cancer in future studies.
Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) is the sixth most common cancer worldwide and includes squamous cell carcinomas of the oropharynx and oral cavity. Patient prognosis has remained poor for decades and molecular targeted therapies are not in routine use. Here we showed that the overall expression of collagen subunit genes was higher in cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) than normal fibroblasts. Focusing on collagen8A1 and collagen11A1, we showed that collagen is produced by both CAFs and tumour cells, indicating that HNSCCs are collagen-rich environments. We then focused on discoidin domain receptor 1 (DDR1), a collagen-activated receptor tyrosine kinase, and showed that it is over-expressed in HNSCC tissues. Further, we demonstrated that collagen promoted the proliferation and migration of HNSCC cells and attenuated the apoptotic response to cisplatin. Knockdown of DDR1 in HNSCC cells demonstrated that these tumour-promoting effects of collagen are mediated by DDR1. Our data suggest that specific inhibitors of DDR1 might provide novel therapeutic opportunities to treat HNSCC.
