The dominant model of power in Marxist theory contains a number of problematic assumptions. These include: (1) the assumption of objective class interests; (2) the assumption that classes are collective social actors; (3) the assumption that classes have a political "consciousness;" and (4) the assumption that the state is the locus of class power. The central error which underlies these four assumptions of the dominant model is a confusion of the theoretical levels of agency and structure in Marxist theory. The uncritical acceptance of these assumptions has been harmful to the development of Marxist theory and political practice. The concept of power occupies a central place in Marxist theory. It is ironic, then, that while the concept of power has received considerable attention recently in mainstream social science literature, it has gone relatively undiscussed within the Marxist camp (see Lukes, 1977;. This lack of discussion is especially unfortunate since the conceptualization of power has figured as an important underlying issue in a number of recent arguments in Marxist theory, ranging from the debate over the state between Ralph Miliband and Nicos Poulantzas to the recent controversy over the new game theoretic Marxism (see Carling, 1986).In the absence of any sustained conceptual debate, &dquo;power&dquo; has been uncritically theorized by Marxists in ways which are thoroughly consistent with its usage in non-Marxist social science but which are inconsistent with Marx's own conceptualization of power.
