Genetic diversity of 12 strains of coccoid cyanobacteria of different hypersaline origins has been studied by amplified 16S rDNA restriction analysis and compared with morphological characters. Cluster analysis was performed on amplified 16S rDNA restriction analysis profiles of those strains along with profiles obtained from sequence data of unicellular halotolerant cyanobacteria belonging to the recently described Halothece cluster. By using this approach, all new strains could be assigned to the Halothece cluster, confirming that unicellular extremely halotolerant cyanobacteria form a monophyletic group among cyanobacteria. New branches inside the Halothece cluster were found and groups of very tightly related strains resulted. z
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
