A. Knowledge, Skills, and Clinical Experience in CancerThe purpose of the workshop was to define and discuss the role of the surgical oncologist in various settings with regards to teaching, research, and administration, and to establish training guidelines for the education of surgical oncologists. Invited participants included medical oncologists, pathologists, pediatric oncologists, gynecologic oncologists and representatives of the American Cancer Society, as well as surgical oncologists who represented a variety of institutions including the cancer hospitals, the university centers, and community hospitals associated with university centers.Our participants were charged with the tasks of 1) defining the role of the surgical oncologist; 2) determining the essential elements of surgical oncology training; 3) defining the interaction of surgical oncology with non-surgical specialties during the training period; and 4) suggesting a mechanism of review and evaluation of surgical oncology programs.
