The literature search found that the academic success of mature students in higher education had been consistently documented in the general education literature since the 1970s. Some earlier work showed that mature students did not perform as well as 18-year-old university entrants (Barnett and Lewis 1963, Kapur 1972), but over the past 25 years the research has consistently shown that mature students perform as well as or better than their younger peers in higher education (
