A correlation between inflammation and cancer has been identified in the case of nasal cancer, however a specific connection between nasal inflammation and extramedullary nasal plasmacytoma (ENP), to the best of our knowledge, has not yet been determined. The present case report describes a patient affected by ENP, in who the tumor arose in the same area, from which a nasal polyp was previously surgically removed, five months after the polyp excision. The patient underwent surgical endoscopic tumor asportation without being treated with radio-chemotherapy. ENP was totally removed via surgery and no signs of recurrence were identified by endoscopy or magnetic resonance imaging during the last checkup 1 year after tumor asportation. It was hypothesized that in this elderly patient, who was exposed to viral infections and pollution for several years, ENP may be correlated to the inflammatory process that occurred after surgery, and this likely contributed to a neoplastic mutation in B-cells.
Background Hormonal variations during pregnancy are frequently linked with functional mucosal alterations both at oral and nasal level. Clinical manifestations of this mucosal involvement can be described generally as pregnancy rhinitis and pregnancy stomatitis and gingivitis. The sexual hormones produced during pregnancy have an important role in the development of rhinitis and gingivitis. Epulis gravidarum affects about 5-10% of pregnant, being defined as a hyperplastic and inflammatory lesion which origins from the buccal mucosa and mainly from gingival tissues. Objective To define whether the coexistence of nasal and oral symptoms should be considered as a major risk factor for the development of epulis gravidarum. Materials and Methods From November 2010 to January 2017, 228 pregnant women were examined during the weeks of gestation, two and four months after partum. They underwent a clinical examination at enrollment (t0), after 2 months (t1), at ninth month of gestation (t2), 2 months after childbirth (t3) and 4 month after childbirth (t4). Were also administered two anamnestic questionnaires concerning the risk factors and nasal and oral symptoms. Patients were divided into 4 groups according to the symptoms of questionnaires: Group A, including women with no nasal and oral risk; Group B, including women with nasal symptoms and no oral involvement; Group C, including pregnant women with oral symptoms and no nasal involvement; and Group D including women with both oral and nasal involvement. Results and Conclusion Our study reveals a statistic significative difference (p=0.01) between the frequency of epulis in pregnant women presenting only gingival symptoms (Group C) compared to those which manifest simultaneously nasal and gum symptoms (Group D). In fact, our results seem to suggest that pregnant women who present both nasal and gum symptoms have an increased risk of developing epulis.
Povidone‐iodine is known for successfully treating surgical wounds; the combination between povidone‐iodine and sugar, also called Knutson's formula, has been proposed to improve wound healing. Currently, no studies have investigated the effects of Knutson's formula to treat defects in wound closure following radio‐chemotherapy in the head and neck region. The aim of this study is to evaluate the efficacy of Knutson's formula in improving the wound‐healing process in patients who underwent radio‐chemotherapy after surgery for head and neck cancer. The study, conducted from August 2013 to January 2017, included a sample of 34 patients (25 males and 9 females; age range: 60‐75 years) treated with radio‐chemotherapy after head and neck cancer surgery. All patients suffered from defect of wound regeneration. Patients were randomly divided into two groups: patients in the study group (n = 18) were treated with Knutson's formula; patients in the control group (n = 16) were treated with traditional topical drugs. In the study group, 16 of 18 (88.9%) patients reached complete wound closure 1 month after treatment, with no wound infections. In the control group, only three patients (18.7%) showed complete wound closure within a month; in addition, one patient required systemic antibiotic treatment because of supra‐bacterial infection of the wound. In our sample, the combination of povidone‐iodine and sugar had a higher success rate compared with traditional topical treatment in the treatment of wound defect closure in oncological patients who underwent radio‐chemotherapy.

Laryngeal localization is rare. Case PresentationIn the last 9-years, we observed three cases of laryngeal haemangioma, two females, and one male. All patients underwent to surgical excision. None of the three cases had intraoperative complications. DiscussionThe elective treatment of laryngeal haemangiomas remains controversial. In our cases, we opted for laser excision and we noticed that the risk of haemorrhages was particularly low, without no post-surgery complications. ConclusionWe believe that due to the low morbidity and the fast-clinical recovery after treatment with definitive problem resolution, surgical treatment with laser CO 2 should be always considered for treatment of laryngeal haemangioma.
