Porphyrin-based Optical Sensors for Environmental and Biomedical Applications. Porphyrins are tetrapyrrolic macrocycles, which are endowed with excellent photophysical and electrochemical properties. However, porphyrins often exhibit low stability and fluorescence quenching under physiological conditions, thus limiting their application in biomedical and environmental sciences. To overcome these limitations, porphyrins can be incorporated into metalorganic frameworks (MOFs), opening new avenues for high-performance materials that integrate the specific physicochemical properties of porphyrins and MOFs, with a wide range of applications, from selective storage of gases, catalysis, to detection of different chemical substances. In this article several examples of porphyrin-based optical sensors are described, addressing the MOFs preparation to porphyrinic MOFs. The detection mechanisms and possible practical applications of the developed systems will also be discussed.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
