In the attempt to prevent cervical cancer, various preventive measures have been instituted, notable among which is the pap smear test, which fulfills the function of early detection of cancer cells or their precursors. Therefore, the objective was to investigate the discourse on the knowledge, feelings and expectations of women regarding the pap smear test. This is an exploratory qualitative approach, conducted with ten users of a Integrated Family Health Unit in the city of João Pessoa in the State of Paraíba. Data collection was conducted through recorded interviews in April 2011. Eight core ideas were identified: prevention of disease; self-motivated search, search recommended by another person; sense of shame and embarrassment, sensation of pain, feeling of satisfaction; conversations during the examination and exchange of knowledge about women's health. Based on the reports, there are many difficulties to be overcome to ensure greater adherence of women to the pap smear test.
Objective: to identify the women's collective knowledge preventive habits of vulvovaginitis and present health care guidelines. Method: this is an exploratory and descriptive study with qualitative approach and analysis through the Collective Subject Discourse technique. The data collection was carried out by means of recorded interviews, with the signing of free and informed consent term, held on April 2011, with ten women from the Unidade Integrada de Saude da Familia São Jose, in the city of Joao Pessoa, Paraiba, Brazil, approved by the Research Ethics Committe of HULW, under the Protocol 731/10 and the CAAE 0564.0.126.000-10. Results: some participants considered condom use irrelevant when having one and only partner. There was divergence in the women's speeches regarding the most effective product to be used for intimate hygiene; they realized the importance of using a piece of cotton wool and loose clothing to manage their vaginal health. Conclusion: there was a lack of knowledge with regard to vulvovaginitis and the preventive behavior of those who have this knowledge. Health education is crucial for the prevention of vaginal disorders. Método: trata-se de estudo exploratório e descritivo com abordagem qualitativa e análise pela técnica do Discurso do Sujeito Coletivo. A coleta de dados foi realizada por meio de entrevistas gravadas, com assinatura de termos de consentimento livre e esclarecido, realizadas em abril de 2011, com dez mulheres da Unidade Integrada de Saúde da Família São José, da cidade de João Pessoa-PB, conforme aprovação do Comitê de Ética em Pesquisa do HULW, sob o Protocolo n. 731/10 e o CAAE n. 0564.0.126.000-10. Resultados: algumas participantes consideravam o uso do preservativo irrelevante quando se tem parceiro único e fixo. Houve divergência nas falas das mulheres quanto ao produto mais eficaz a ser utilizado na higiene íntima; perceberam a importância do uso de peça de algodão e vestimentas folgadas para sua saúde vaginal. Conclusão: houve déficit de conhecimento referente à vulvovaginite e ao comportamento preventivo daquelas que detêm esse conhecimento. A educação em saúde é de fundamental importância para a prevenção de afecções vaginais. La recogida de datos se realizó por medio de entrevistas grabadas, con firma de término de consentimiento libre y esclarecido, realizadas en abril de 2011, com diez mujeres de la Unidade Integrada de Saúde da Família São José, en la ciudad de João Pessoa, Paraiba, Brasil, de acuerdo con el Comité de Ética en Investigación del HULW, bajo el Protocolo 731/10 y el CAAE 0564.0.126.000-10. Resultados: algunas participantes consideraban el uso del preservativo irrelevante cuando se tiene un compañero único y fijo. Hubo divergencia en las hablas de las mujeres en cuanto al producto más eficaz a utilizar en la higiene íntima; ellas percibieron la importancia del uso de tela de algodón y vestimentas holgadas para su salud vaginal. Conclusión: hubo déficit de conocimiento referente a la vulvovaginitis y al comportamiento preventivo de aquellas que tienen ese conocimiento. La educación en salud es de fundamental importancia para la prevención de afecciones vaginales. Descriptores: prevención y control; salud de la mujer; educación en salud.
