Chromosome elimination is a widespread developmental phenomenon in insects. The main types of chromosome elimination take place at early embryonic somatic cleavages and at the first male meiotic division. The cellular mechanisms responsible for both elimination types are different but show common aspects in Diptera, notably unusual anaphase behavior of the chromosomes to be eliminated. Chromosome elimination can be parent‐of‐origin specific, highlighting this phenomenon as an example of genomic imprinting.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
