Summary.-Species of the genus Setaria existing in the lberian Peninsula have been reviewed. The best taxonomical characteristics suited to diHerentiating the species are given and a graphie key featuring ail the species is provided to facilitate identification. A mention is made of problems of nomenclature and synonyms, as weil as taxonomical confusions in the literature. ln ali, 9 taxons (7 species and 2 varieties) are included, which represents the most extensive specifie diversity of this genus in a European country.
Comparison of the morphological characters of specimens of Geigeria aspalathoides (Asteraceae, Inuleae), with the aid of cluster analysis, indicates the existence of two subspecies endemic from Angola: subsp. aspalathoides and subsp. chorleyana. In addition, we describe a new species of this genus, Geigeria decurrens, from Angola.
The anti-inflammatory action of fucoidans is well known, based on both in vitro and some in vivo studies. The other biological properties of these compounds, their lack of toxicity, and the possibility of obtaining them from a widely distributed and renewable source, makes them attractive novel bioactives. However, fucoidans’ heterogeneity and variability in composition, structure, and properties depending on seaweed species, biotic and abiotic factors and processing conditions, especially during extraction and purification stages, make it difficult for standardization. A review of the available technologies, including those based on intensification strategies, and their influence on fucoidan composition, structure, and anti-inflammatory potential of crude extracts and fractions is presented.
