Traditionally, career counseling has tended to care for men's careers, it was conceived and written by white middle-class college men for middle-class white men. Nowadays, the theories developed in this field are lacking of studies on other social classes and especially, for the feminine public. Women's participation in the world of work is a relevant social issue, due to cultural barriers that still persist, and to a sexual division of labor that assigns them to the functions of care and social reproduction in the domestic sphere, which are not considered work. Psychology has approached gender studies in the understanding of social phenomena that have been structured in a patriarchal society that is misogynistic and heteronormative. The challenge proposed in this dissertation was to investigate in the literature how gender issues are being portrayed in career and professional orientation by psychology in the periodicals published in the Brazilian Journal of Professional Guidance, to understand where the gaps are and how they are perceived by the academic community of the psychological sciences. Is it a politically and ethically committed professional orientation, which bases its analysis on gender issues? It sought to overcome the traditional conceptions of positivist psychology and its orthodoxies, approaching Feminist Psychology and its gender discussions that comprise social phenomena as established social, historical and cultural constructions in a society marked by inequality in the relations between men and women. There were 29 articles of the journal published semiannually between 2003 and 2017, totaling 335 articles, of which only 12 publications relate Gender to Professional Orientation. The articles were analyzed in full on the basis of some criteria and subdivided into three categories, namely: "Gender: the feminine versus the masculine"; in "Gender: systemic interventions", "Gender: family-work reconciliation". Based on the analysis of the articles, we can confirm that committed investigations were carried out with the emancipation of women in their professional and academic development, in particular, the qualitative studies presented in their researches concerns with the practice of Vocational Counseling towards girls and women. However, it was observed empirical studies that although it has brought comparisons between young people and young girls in their research results, did not base its analyzes with regard to the gender issues; on the occasion the focus of this researcher has been to focus on the validation of an instrument or characterization of the public. It was concluded that Vocational Counseling is relevant to the career of all women and the role of professionals in this specific area of Psychology that discusses, researches and acts in work and in professional careers, has as responsibility, to defend and to propose practices that promote social justice and gender equality.
