The article studies culture codes in contemporary children’s literature and aims to identify how language units and imagery condense and transmit the culture code of a specific society and epoch. The authors narrow down the research to two countries — Scotland and Armenia — because of the common features of their children’s literature: the use of a different language in fiction, the approach to the cultural component in fiction and the influence of the countries’ past. The research has two distinct directions: based on selected texts by Scottish writers the paper discusses the issue of transmitting culture codes in a multi-voiced medium. Further, based on the text by Narine Abgarian, a Russian writer of Armenian origin, the culture codes of childhood in the multicultural setting are discussed. It is argued that despite the current trends in the international book market, children’s literature containing authentic cultural information should be promoted. Such children’s literature performs an important mission toward shaping the readers’ identity, raising awareness of one’s own culture and facilitating intercultural communication.
Largely speaking, the present paper seeks to substantiate the role of the pragmastylistic analysis as a crucial tool for the study of relations between various levels of literary texts and to illustrate how the pragmatic and stylistic dimensions in the study of the literary texts can become an efficient extension to the traditional analytical toolkit. Our major objective is to expose the role of the character’s speech in the work of fiction, meanwhile observing those pragmastylistic resources employed by the author which contribute to the formation of the pragmatic meaning of the text and support the pragmatic impact on the reader.
The present article aims at studying the phenomenon of artistic concept by providing a detailed analysis of linguistic choices and patterns in the text with a systematic consideration of the mental processes and representations that are involved in the process of interpretation. The tools provided by the recent developments in cognitive approach are applied to enlarge the scope of studies in artistic concepts in general and also to highlight the major features that make the artistic concept distinct from the general cultural concepts. The practical study is based on alienation – one of the key concepts exploited in the contemporary literature.
The present paper aims at observing the peculiarities of the linguistic representation of the concept loneliness in K. Mansfield’s authorial world picture. The authorial approach to the representation of the mentioned concept is studied in phonetic, lexical and syntactic aspects with the aim of discovering the specificities of interaction at micro and macro-levels of the text. A preliminary overview of the linguistic representation of the concept loneliness provided by the research will enable linking the results of the study with the cognitive stylistic individuality of the author.
