Among a sample of 196 participants, small differences in holistic client functioning, as measured by standardized Adult Needs and Strengths Assessment (Lyons & Walton, 1999) and symptom severity scores, emerged across 3 diagnostic categories of serious mental illness (SMI; i.e., depression, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia). However, sizable variations in symptom severity were evident across diagnoses of SMI, despite study participants receiving a similar configuration and intensity of recovery‐oriented usual‐care services. These results may evidence previous concerns surrounding the transdiagnosis of SMI, overlapping criteria and symptomatology among disorders in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, and mental health treatment and service practices in the United States. Implications for counselor practice are discussed.
Attrition rates and professional advancement for faculty of color remain issues in CACREP‐accredited counseling programs. We interviewed 15 faculty of color regarding their perceptions of mentorship and the potential influence on retention and promotion. Findings include best practices for future mentorship models and implications for counselor education programs.
The Child and Adolescent Career Construction Interview (CACCI), adapted from the Career Construction Interview, is a comprehensive career counseling intervention tailored to meet the developmental needs of children and adolescents, and is especially designed to address preadolescent needs in career and social/emotional domains. Because of the dearth of child and adolescent career development research, unique career development needs of preadolescent girls, and potential benefits of a gender homogenous group intervention, the purpose of this phenomenological study was to examine preadolescent girls’ lived experiences of participating in a CACCI group. Findings of this study have the potential to inform developmentally appropriate career counseling for preadolescents. Through the CACCI, counselors can help preadolescents explore their conception of self and their approach to decision‐making and problem‐solving. By adopting a present‐focused approach, counselors facilitate preadolescents’ development of self‐awareness in the “here and now,” laying the foundation for future self‐exploration as they move through adolescent development.
