The field of economy and finance is a conceptually rich domain where information is complex, huge in volume and a highly valuable business product by itself. Novel management techniques are required for economic and financial information in order to enable an efficient generation, management and consumption of complex and big information resources. Following this direction, we have developed and ontology-based platform that provides a) the integration of contents and semantics in a knowledge base that provides a conceptual view on low-level contents, b) an adaptive hypermedia-based knowledge visualization and navigation system and c) semantic search facilities. We have developed, as the basis of this platform, an ontology for the domain of economic and financial information.
Wiki4R will create an innovative virtual research environment (VRE) for Open Science at scale, engaging both professional researchers and citizen data scientists in new and potentially transformative forms of collaboration. It is based on the realizations that (1) the structured parts of the Web itself can be regarded as a VRE, (2) such environments depend on communities, (3) closed environments are limited in their capacity to nurture thriving communities. Wiki4R will therefore integrate Wikidata, the multilingual semantic backbone behind Wikipedia, into existing research processes to enable transdisciplinary research and reduce fragmentation of research in and outside Europe. By establishing a central shared information node, research data can be linked and annotated into knowledge. Despite occasional uses of Wikipedia or Wikidata in research, significant barriers to broader adoption in the sciences or digital humanities exist, including lack of integration into existing research processes and inadequate handling of provenances. ABSTRACTWe present Fortunata, a wiki-based framework designed to simplify the creation of semantically-enabled web applications. This framework facilitates the management and publication of semantic data in web-based applications, to the extent that application developers do not need to be skilled in client-side technologies, and promotes application reuse by fostering collaboration among developers by means of wiki plugins. We ¡Ilústrate the use of this framework with two Fortunata-based applications named OMEMO and VPOET, and we evalúate it with two experiments performed with usability evaluators and application developers respectively. These experiments show a good balance between the usability of the applications created with this framework and the effort and skills required by developers.
This article presents an investigation on the educational value of virtual worlds intended for the acquisition of procedural knowledge. This investigation takes as a case of study a virtual laboratory on biotechnology. A remarkable feature in this virtual laboratory is an automatic tutor that supervises student's actions and provides tutoring feedback when it is appropriate. The study presented in this article covers two different aspects of the system. First, it analyzes the impact of this virtual world in learning some concepts related to a biotechnology practice; and second, it surveys the students' opinion on the virtual world by means of three open questions (posi tive, negative, and general impressions). Results demonstrated that the virtual world had a positive influence in the students' knowledge, and it was well received by them.
