This article discusses developing and employing skill and ability tests for hiring people in supprt staff positions in acquisitions and cataloging. While the historical background for employment testing is both supportive and somewhat controversial, a clear trend for utilizing hiring tests is developing in the '90s. Valid skill and ability tests in connection with more conventional selection procedures provide managers with additional concrete data for improving hiring decisions and avoiding costly hiring mistakes.
