In the recent years, reporting and transparency of banks is in the focus of national and international regulators and their aim is to increase the transparency of financial institutions in order to strengthen stability of the banking system. In this paper, the authors used dynamic panel analysis in order to analyze the practice of Internet financial reporting of Croatian banks in the period from 2010 to 2014. Research of Bank's Internet financial reporting practices was carried out at two levels. At the first, descriptive level, the goal of the research was to determine the level as well as trends of Internet financial reporting of 27 Croatian banks during the observed period. It is assumed that the level of Internet financial reporting during the analyzed period increased as a result of stricter regulations in the financial sector. In order to measure the level of financial reporting by banks, Bank Internet financial reporting score was developed on the basis of 45 elements -criteria which are divided into two groups: financial reporting (20 elements) and corporate governance and risks (25 elements). The second goal of the research was to determine factors that significantly affect the practice of Bank Internet financial reporting in Croatia. The authors applied dynamic panel analysis in order to determine the impact of size, profitability, adequacy of capital and ownership structure on the level of Internet financial reporting of banks.
Research background: Intellectual capital (IC) is given an increasing importance in the context of companies’ activities in the knowledge – oriented economy and is thought to be a key factor of competitiveness and financial performance enhancement in modern globalized world. Many methods have been introduced over time to measure IC with value added intellectual capital (VAIC) proposed by Pulic (1998) playing an important role. Purpose of the article: The aim of this paper is to investigate the relationship between the intellectual capital and its components, specifically, human capital, capital employed and structural efficiency on corporate performance of Croatian companies listed on Zagreb Stock Exchange (ZSE) in the period 2016 – 2020. Methods: The performance is expressed with profitability, specifically ROA, and market valuation, i.e. Tobin’s Q while the value added intellectual capital (VAIC) is used to measure IC as well as its components. A set of control variables comprising of firm size, leverage and age is also covered in the research while static panel analysis is performed to identify variables that might contribute to firm performance. Findings & Value added: The statistically significant and positive influence of VAIC and its components indicate that an enhancement in the efficiency of firms’ resources and employees’ knowledge leads to creation of new economic value.
The recent outbreak of coronavirus has caused the worst global economic crisis in the last few decades. A substantial number of companies have experienced severe economic difficulties and were tempted to adjust their financial figures in order to reach certain business thresholds. Maintaining an existing level of dividend payments is a powerful incentive to engage in such activities. The aim of this article was to estimate the effect of the economic crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic on the relationship between the estimated level of earnings management and dividend payments made by companies.Research models were estimated using panel analysis. The Modified Jones model was utilized to assess the level of earnings management. A total of 56 companies listed on the Zagreb Stock Exchange in the Republic of Croatia with their financial data from 2015 to 2020 were included in the research sample.Unlike in the case of absolute and income-decreasing discretionary accruals, results indicated that the economic crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic positively affected the relationship between earnings management and dividend payments in the case of income-increasing accruals regarding companies that made regular dividend payments. In conclusion, the economic crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic was an additional incentive for certain companies to perform income-increasing earnings management to reach the desired level of dividend payments.
