Morbidity and mortality due to postoperative complications, related to inflammation and systemic oxidative stress, of coronary artery bypass grafting is high and inadmissible. It is suggested that numerous adverse outcomes may be caused by the systemic effect of cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB). One of the most damaging consequences of these events is the formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and radicals, which originate from a variety of cellular and enzymatic sources, such as myocardial cells, activated neutrophils, or endothelial xanthine oxidase. Many studies have described the nature of these ROS and the time of their formation during CPB. With the goal of reducing these damages, studies have investigated the use of antioxidant supplements during CPB. The present study focused on the time course of the innate antioxidant activity (antioxidant enzymes and overall antioxidant capacity in plasma) in patients undergoing CABG. The methodology used was the literature review.
The artificial auxiliary heart is a method produced to be used in humans who present with severe heart disease and need to replace the native organ. Its main purpose is to provide patients with waiting for a healthy and compatible heart transplant. In this way the objective was to describe the mechanism of operation of the artificial heart. As a specific goal to address the inherent aspects of the native heart. It used as a research methodology of a bibliographical nature, carried out through the analysis of publications of periodicals made available by electronic means, which contemplated the scientific production on the artificial heart. The results demonstrated that the frequency conditions of the artificial heart take into consideration the adequate pressure and flow, without leaks and good response in the sensors with variation of the pressure. It was concluded that the Brazilian artificial heart, which beats together with the natural heart, can save life of many heart patients who are unable to perform transplantation. Thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysm (TAAA) is characterized by enlargement of the aortic segment in the diaphragmatic crura and extends by a proximal and / or distal variable distance from that point. The main sources of morbidity during operative repair of TAAAs are multiple organ failure, paraplegia, and respiratory, cardiac, or renal complications. In this context, the recent introduction of endovascular techniques may extend TAAA repair indications to high-risk patients whose only alternative is now represented by better clinical therapy. The main objective of this article is to describe the surgical treatment of thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysms and the methodology used was the literature review. The long-term results of most thoracic or abdominal aortic aneurysm reconstructions are satisfactory. However, some patients require a reoperation for a separate aneurysm after the original aortic reconstruction.
