Background and Study Aim. There is a void in the literature comparing the fitness effects of housework-based exercise (HBE) and conventional exercise (CE), including studies that adapt housework into an exercise program. This study examines the effectiveness of HBE and CE on adolescent learners' health-related fitness (HRF) and compares the effectiveness of the two exercises. Material and Methods. This study uses a parallel-group, randomized controlled trial with 120 adolescent learners; 60 are in the HBE group, and 60 are in the CE group. The participants in the HBE group exercised using housework activities, while the participants in the CE group exercised by doing push and pull, squats, lunges, leaps and jumps, planks, etc. The participants in both groups trained for at least an hour every weekday for 12 weeks under the supervision of qualified fitness instructors. Results. The findings show that HBE improves the fitness levels of adolescent learners, albeit it has no significant improvement in their BMI. Furthermore, HBE significantly improves the cardiorespiratory fitness of females more than males. Finally, CE outperforms the HBE in producing more significant and favorable fitness effects. Conclusions. When planned, implemented, and monitored carefully as an exercise program, doing housework is just as good as doing traditional exercise for keeping or improving adolescent learners’ fitness. Furthermore, the findings indicate that HBE may be more appropriate for females because it involves household-related tasks that they traditionally perform.However, CE produces more positive and significant fitness effects. Thus, teachers can use HBE in the remote exercise activities of their learners along with CE.
The study intended to look back the experiences of the last batch of the university graduates taking Music, Arts and Physical Education as the area of specialization in Education in one of the Higher Education Institutions in Cebu, Philippines. Specifically, the study elaborated on the graduates’ personal and professional characteristics, retrospective evaluation, perceived levels of self-efficacy and lived experiences of the graduates on how the program aided them in their teaching profession. Concurrent mixed method was utilized in the study: (1) descriptive retrospective survey using a questionnaire (quantitative) and (2) narrative inquiry design (qualitative) using semi-structured interview with the nine graduates as the key informants of the study. All nine graduates are employed, with seven of them teaching in their field. Graduates’ retrospective evaluation of their university experience revealed that their practicum experience was the most relevant which provided them the edge and opportunity to taste the reality of teaching. The strength of the program is identified in dance and sports while the teaching of health, music and arts-related courses were regarded weak. Graduates perceived level of self – efficacy was high as indicated by their ability to develop initiatives towards professional growth, and to work with people of different backgrounds. Further, three (3) emerging themes revealed as the self-instilled work values of the graduates such as persistence, love of work and open-mindedness that assisted them to be able to sustain and survive in their teaching career. This study concluded that Music, Arts and Physical Education (MAPE) is still relevant even with the existence of the new mandated Physical Education curricular program to the development of the knowledge, skills, attitudes and competencies of the MAPE graduates vis-à-vis to the demand and need of the labor market and of what is expected from them in this changing time. <p> </p><p><strong> Article visualizations:</strong></p><p><img src="/-counters-/edu_01/0798/a.php" alt="Hit counter" /></p>
Background and Study Aim. The COVID – 19 pandemic has post threats on the physical and mental fitness of the people. Thus, the study determined the effectiveness of home quarantine - based rhythmic exercises to the fitness level of the university students in physical education. Material and Methods. University students were the participants of the study. 200 student populations who were taking physical education subject in the year 2020 were considered. Quasi – experimental research design was employed and 96 participants between the age bracket of 18 - 26 (74 females & 22 males) were chosen using simple random sampling in determining the population size of the study. SPSS program was used in the analysis in the obtained data. Results. The result shown that there is a significant difference between the pre – test and post – test results in the fitness level of the participants in body mass index (T= -3.482, p < .001), cardiovascular endurance (T= -4.193, p < .000), flexibility (T= -6.279, p <.000), muscular endurance (T= -9.553, p <.000), and muscular strength (T= -7.569, p < .000) performing the home quarantine-based rhythmic exercises. Conclusion. Further, it is concluded that engaging in two (2) months home quarantine – based rhythmic exercises from 30 minutes to 1 hour with moderate to vigorous intensity augment the physical fitness level of an individual. Moreover, it is recommended to put vision accounts in strengthening the inclusion of home quarantine - based rhythmic exercises in teaching physical education either in synchronous and asynchronous in teaching – learning process.
The study determined the potential factors in the engagement of students’ physical activity beyond regular physical education class. Participants were 476 secondary students aged between 16 and 22 from randomly selected public and private schools of Metro Cebu, Philippines. Cross-sectional survey design was used to examine the potential factors of students in engaging physical activity such as autonomy support, behavioural regulations, and intentions outside school. The study highlighted on the presence of physical learning resources or equipment as perceived by students as strong support in the continuous engagement in physical activity. Moreover, internal regulation is more accepted reason for students in allowing themselves to participate in any physical activity. Further, the intention of the students in partaking in physical activity is a form of leisure time for them. It is concluded that students and/or individuals will participate or engage in physical activity if they perceived supported and motivated. Additionally, it is recommended to provide and/or maintain high quality P.E. learning resources and fortify the engagement of students in physical activity in school through physical education subject to ensure higher transcendence at home and in the community. <p> </p><p><strong> Article visualizations:</strong></p><p><img src="/-counters-/edu_01/0743/a.php" alt="Hit counter" /></p>
Background and the Study Aim. The study describes the association of blood types and physical fitness capability of physical education students. Material and Methods. A non-parametric analysis was used in the study employing chi-square with the Cramer’s V analysis to provide the likelihood relationship between variables. Using the simple random sampling, there were 263 participants composed of 198 (75.3%) females and 65 (24.7%) males. The samples were all students from physical education subject with the age ranged from 17-34 years old. Results. The finding showed that among the physical fitness capability of the PE students, only anaerobic and flexibility fitness have positive association to blood types. Further, anaerobic fitness has the likelihood to be more advantageous within the A blood type with 57.1%. While flexibility fitness is seen in blood type O with a likelihood association of 79.1%, A with 60.7%, and B 55.3%. Moreover, this implies that PE students’ physical fitness capability such as anaerobic and flexibility fitness are potentiality associated or related to blood types most specifically to “A” and “O.” Thus, in any fitness related physical activity, blood type must be considered in the selection process especially if instills high intensity exercises producing without oxygen and muscle range extension. Conclusion. It has been concluded that physical fitness capability of an individual can be attributed or influenced by the type of blood he/she possesses. Thus, in the context of sports and dance competition that requires specific physical fitness level, it is recommended to consider blood types of a person.
