The number of individuals with mental illness involved with the criminal justice system has increased over the past 40 years. Several factors have influenced this growth, including the deinstitutionalization movement, changes in commitment laws, tougher drug control laws (Lurigio, 2001), and general attitudes of "lock 'em up" (Lamb & Weinberger, 1998;Teplin, 1983).
