We combine a novel measure of export-related financial needs at the product level with a unique database of firm-product export data (including names of the exporting firms) from five developing countries. Using the tools of survival analysis and taking into account firms' and products' heterogeneity, we then examine the impact of financial development on the long-term trade. Finance matters for sustainable export performance, as goods with higher export-related financial needs disproportionately benefit from better financial development. Our results complement existing literature on finance and trade, which has relied on production-based measures of financial dependence at the industry or firm level. We show that contract-intensive industries particularly thrive both in countries with high initial level of …nancial development and in the US states that deregulated their banking sector. These industries use high share of relationshipspeci…c inputs that can be purchased only via speci…c contracts with the suppliers. Accordingly, both …rms in those industries and their suppliers face above-average levels of risk and transaction costs. Our empirical results thus con…rm the theoretical claim that …nance promotes real economy via managing risk and decreasing transaction costs. Furthermore, the pro-growth e¤ect of …nance seems to come from …nancial intermediaries like banks rather than from stock markets. This suggests that the intrinsic functions of relationship-banking (long-term commitment, increase in reputation and planning horizon of the borrowers) are especially important for the contract-intensive industries.

We show that exported products exit the US market sooner if they violate the Heckscher-Ohlin notion of comparative advantage. Crucially, this pattern is stronger when exporting country has a well-developed banking system, measured by a high ratio of bank credit over the GDP. Banks thus push firms away from exports that are facing an uphill battle on a competitive foreign market due to a suboptimal use of the domestic factor endowment. Our results imply a disciplining role for bank credit in terminating inefficient trade flows. This constitutes a new channel through which finance improves resource allocation in the real economy.
