This study explores the implementation of the Sandwich Principle of Teaching (SPoT) in facilitating the students to voice their thoughts properly while learning about research in English Language Teaching (ELT). This case study is guided by the theory of research-led teaching from Walkington and SPoT from Wahl. The study employed 30 students of higher education as research participants. In 14 weeks, the teacher alternately used traditional and collaborative learning. The students were involved in various learning experiences; formulating lesson goals, reading journal articles, selecting the article, identifying the gap, and choosing and defining research topics. The findings revealed that the integration of SPoT into research-led teaching provides guidance for the teacher to teach research and space to voice their thought under the language learning research program. The findings show a positive attitude on students’ experiences in each stage of the learning research program through SPoT. Based on the findings, it is concluded that the integration of SPoT into research-led teaching could provide the students a space to voice their thought in the language learning research program. They got better learning experiences as they could engage actively in the class and voice their thoughts as well.
Recently, one of popular programs on TV is Waktu Indonesia Bercanda (WIB). It is a Quiz Show program that offers problems to solve and the host makes use fallacies as the core of its game. WIB offers the sense of achievement among its participants, but competitive atmosphere is hardly to find among them. This research tries to analyze the fallacies being used in WIB and figure out how such fallacies can encourage people to think critically. The research employs descriptive research design as it simply attempts to determine, describe or identify phenomena. 6 WIB from September through December were randomly selected as the subject of the research. The result shows that WIB demonstrates the use of fallacies of relevance but it avoids using argumentum ad hominem that contains personal attack. WIB may encourage the audiences and participants to think critically as fallacious arguments offered make the audiences work hard to think any possible implicatures. Eventually, WIB is the program that invites the participants and the viewers to think, evaluate and decide the answer or solution to the problem provided. In conclusion, WIB is a worth watching ShowQuiz as it is entertaining and encouraging its audience to think critically.
Popularly known as a core of cooperative learning, group work is frequently applied in classroom. However, some researches revealed that collaborative atmosphere was hardly found in the groupwork. The available researches mainly discussed the students' perspective through questionnaires and only a few tried to picture the students' beliefs from group discussion. Therefore, the current study investigated the students' attitudes towards group work by asking them to share their experiences while working in the group. and figured out how such attitudes influenced their interaction with the other members in the group. The empirical data were obtained from questionnaires, group discussion and discourse analysis. The participants of the research were 51 sophomores who got involved in filling in a questionnaire and some of them were taken to join FGD in which they voluntarily express their opinions regarding group work. In addition, the study also managed to record student's interaction in groups. The data showed that the students' interactions in the group work did not go as cooperative learning suggested. The five elements of cooperative learning hardly found in the group. Most students in the group relied on one person to do the whole task assigned. As the result, some of them think that group work was a waste of time. This finding suggested that the group work would fail to promote cooperative learning if interdependence and individual accountability were not enforced. Therefore, acting as a facilitator, the teacher is supposed to find the way to cater the interdepended and fortify the sense of collaboration among students.
Abstract-Pancasila, as a nation foundation of Indonesia, is well known throughout the country. In order to know Pancasila in detail, it is significant to identify the founder of Pancasila, Soekarno, the first president of Indonesia. This paper is aimed to demystify Soekarno's speech that marked the birth of the five basic principles, Pancasila. Considering that speech is a kind of discourse in general, Foucauldian method is employed to analyze it. The analysis covered the context, surface of text, rhetorical means, and the ideological statement lying in the speech. The result of analysis revealed that through Pancasila, Soekarno wanted to spread the main spirit of gotongrojong which can be viewed as spirit to work together with everyone no matter who to gain justice, equality, and fairness. Soekarno believed that justice, equality, and fairness can be attained through the principles of socio-nationalism, socio democracy, and belief in God. If the socio-nationalism, socio democracy, and belief in God can work well so the unity for better Indonesia can be achieved.
