A field study investigated the effect o f race and sex on helping behaviour. Four Asian (two males and two females) and four white English (two males and two females) requestors asked 205 white English subjects for change for a coin. Both male and female subjects displayed racial discrimination (against the Asian requestors) in same-sex encounters but not in opposite-sex encounters and the discussion considers this interaction between race. sex and helping. Racial discrimination was not related to the subject's social class but was characteristic of older (above 40 years) but not younger (below 40 years) subjects. 0144-6665/81/040285-08 W.OO/O@ 1981 The British Psychological Society of Personality and Social Psychology, 32,964970.Appleton-Century-Crofts.
