The assertion that the leadership style exhibited by the community leaders influenced the participations of community members in development activities was examined in this study using Irasa community in Ado-Ekiti as a case study. An instrument tagged ‘Questionnaire for Community Members’ was used for this study. The instrument was administered on thirty randomly selected respondents in the community. Information obtained revealed that respondents believed that community development involved setting up of goals which are done jointly through the involvement of all stake holders. Participation in Community Development Projects was not regarded as mandatory hence offenders were not liable to punishment. Also, the in-flow and out-flow of information were not restricted by the leaders and their directives were not strictly complied with. The leaders respected and protected the self esteems of the subjects. The leaders recognized the subjects’ worth and esteems, based their actions on trust, integrity, honesty, equality, openness and mutual respects. All these were features of democratic or participative leadership style. In conclusion, this study revealed that democratic leadership practised in the study area lends credence to the assertion that when good leadership is provided the people participate voluntarily in the accomplishment of stated objectives.
Learning is a life-long process through which one uses acquired experiences to deal with new situations, develop new relationships and solve new problems. Learning in school must not be seen as being enough for solving everyday problem, hence there is need to learn and develop new skills that are practicable and can make people become employable in labour market. The problem of unemployment is all over the world now, however, those who had acquired necessary skills would find themselves employable in any situation. This study examines the effective skills that would make graduates of universities either employable or be self reliant in their own businesses. The researcher employed a descriptive research design of the survey type. A sample of 100 respondents was used for the study while a self designed questionnaire tagged “Effective skills for Labour Market and Implication for community Development” was used to gather the needed data. The data collected were analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics. One research question and three hypotheses were generated for the study and the results show among others that there is a significant relationship between effective labour skills and employability and that employability is significantly related to improved living which is an index of community development. It is, therefore, recommended that for graduates to be gainfully employed in a bid to contribute to the development of their persons as well as their communities, they must be armed with effective skills which would lead to their productivity in the labour market. Thereby, improving their living standards as well as being able to make their impact felt in their communities.
Education is a vital tool for development because it is a lifelong process. Education whether formal, informal or non-formal is germane to development and improved living. Education, with which literacy is essentially associated can lead to improved living both on a personal basis and on the community level. This is a fact when education is viewed not only as a social service but a transformative act that is fundamental to people as well as community development as it expands people's knowledge base. Literacy, which used to be traditionally defined as the ability to read, write and calculate has drastically left this stage as the world is globally technologically driven and bearing in mind that literacy is man's capacity to expand his own consciousness in a bid to exercise his power over himself, his environment and his society at large. Literacy has also been internationally identified both as human right and a crucial instrument for the personal pursuit of other rights. This paper ,therefore, addresses the importance of literacy acquisition in a bid to meet the needs of all to achieve improved living, self esteem, empowerment, creativity, critical reflection and to access vital information needed for self growth and community development. The author recommends among others that literacy should be accompanied by technology in this technological driven age, that the Federal Government of Nigeria should desist from emphasising formal education but should fund non-formal education to enable every person have access to education. Individuals too must be willing to become literate to overcome poverty.
