Reactive oxygen species (ROS) including the superoxide anion radical and hydrogen peroxide have been closely implicated in most diseases. ROS frequently react with cellular thiols to form the corresponding disulfides. Furthermore, it is thought that sulfur can be oxidized beyond the disulfide state by ROS under conditions prevalent in oxidative stress.
