Abstract. The Inner Mongolia grassland, one of the most important grazing regions in China, has long been threatened by land degradation and desertification, mainly due to overgrazing. To understand vegetation responses over the last decade, this study evaluated trends in vegetation cover and phenology dynamics in the Inner Mongolia grassland by applying a normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) time series obtained by the Terra Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) during 2002-2014. The results showed that the cumulative annual NDVI increased to over 77.10 % in the permanent grassland region (2002)(2003)(2004)(2005)(2006)(2007)(2008)(2009)(2010)(2011)(2012)(2013)(2014). The mean value of the total change showed that the start of season (SOS) date and the peak vegetation productivity date of the season (POS) had advanced by 5.79 and 2.43 days, respectively. The end of season (EOS) was delayed by 5.07 days. These changes lengthened the season by 10.86 days. Our results also confirmed that grassland changes are closely related to spring precipitation and increasing temperature at the early growing period because of global warming. Overall, productivity in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region tends to increase, but in some grassland areas with grazing, land degradation is ongoing.
The Clostridium stercorarium xylanase Xyn10B is a modular enzyme comprising two thermostabilizing domains, a family 10 catalytic domain of glycosyl hydrolases, a family 9 carbohydrate-binding module (CBM), and two S-layer homologous (SLH) domains [Biosci. Biotechnol. Biochem., 63, 1596-1604 (1999)]. To investigate the role of this CBM, we constructed two derivatives of Xyn10B and compared their hydrolytic activity toward xylan and some preparations of plant cell walls; Xyn10BdeltaCBM consists of a catalytic domain only, and Xyn10B-CBM comprises a catalytic domain and a CBM. Xyn10B-CBM bound to various insoluble polysaccharides including Avicel, acid-swollen cellulose, ball-milled chitin, Sephadex G-25, and amylose-resin. A cellulose binding assay in the presence of soluble saccharides suggested that the CBM of Xyn10B had an affinity for even monosaccharides such as glucose, galactose, xylose, mannose and ribose. Removal of the CBM from the enzyme negated its cellulose- and xylan-binding abilities and severely reduced its enzyme activity toward insoluble xylan and plant cell walls but not soluble xylan. These findings clearly indicated that the CBM of Xyn10B is important in the hydrolysis of insoluble xylan. This is the first report of a family 9 CBM with an affinity for insoluble xylan in addition to crystalline cellulose and the ability to increase hydrolytic activity toward insoluble xylan.
Preoperative CTLG visualized the correct number and site of SLNs in surrounding anatomy during routine computed tomography to evaluate distant metastases. Referring to CTLG, SLNs were identified using IGFI, resulting in successful SLN navigation and saving time and cost. This method appears clinically applicable as a less-invasive method for treating superficial esophageal cancer.
Sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) has been developed as a new diagnostic and therapeutic modality in melanoma and breast cancer surgery. The purpose of the SLNB include preventing the operative morbidity and improving the pathologic stage by focusing on fewer lymph nodes using immunocytochemic and molecular technology has almost achieved in breast cancer surgery. The prognostic meaning of immunocytochemically detected micrometastases is also evaluating in the SLN and bone marrow aspirates of women with early-stage breast cancer. SLNB using available techniques have suggested that the lymphatic drainage of the gastrointestinal tract is much more complicated than other sites, skip metastasis being rather frequent because of an aberrant lymphatic drainage outside of the basin exist. At the moment, the available data does not justify reduced extent of lymphadenectomy, but provides strong evidence for an improvement in tumor staging on the basis of SLNB. Two large scale prospective multi-center trials concerning feasibility of gamma-probe and dye detection for gastric cancer are ongoing in Japan. Recent studies have shown favorable results for identification of SLN in esophageal cancer. CT lymphography with endoscopic mucosal injection of iopamidol was applicable for SLN navigation of superficial esophageal cancer. The aim of surgical treatment is complete resection of the tumor-infiltrated organ including the regional lymph nodes. Accurate detection of SLN can achieve a selection of a more sophisticated tailor made approach. The patient can make a individualized choice from a broader spectrum of therapeutic options including endoscopic, laparoscopic or laparoscopy-assisted surgery, modified radical surgery, and typical radical surgery with lymph node dissection. Ultrastaging by detecting micrometastasis at the molecular level and the choice of an adequate treatment improve the postoperative quality of life and survival. However these issues require further investigation.
