The article examines the interplay between communication and transport. Transport is understood as material communication, and a communication concept including both forms of communication is utilized. A discussion of some of the principal mechanisms that tend to generate close interaction between these modes of communication follows. Two areas demonstrating the interplay between communication and transport, and which have important empirical and theoretical implications, are investigated: (1) mobility and arenas of communication in everyday life and (2) the structuring and use of physical and virtual space.
