This article discusses the media's perspective related to incest rape case in Jambi written by the editorial board and posted in The Jakarta Post's opinion column. The aim of this paper is finding out the media's evaluation toward the case using an appraisal system. The analysis is done by classifying which utterance in the data that consists of several arguments and opinions. Later on, the researchers highlight and discuss expressions which represent the media's evaluation of the government, the family member of the victim, and the whole society and state relating to the case. The result of the analysis presents that the media put their negative evaluation toward the hearing decision and sentence addressed to the victim, especially negative evaluation of judgment and appreciation. Those negative evaluations are deemed as a form of defense from media instead of a neutral commentary.
Despite the fact that material development has been widely discussed and reported in the area of English Language Teaching, there is not much empirical evidence available so far that addresses material development in listening, especially in Indonesian context. To fill this gap, the writers examined the result of material development that includes the integration of Islamic values in some units of Nunan’s Listen in 1 book. Employing Dick, Carey, & Carey model of Research and Development design, the article exhibits the integration of Islamic values in the activities of warming up, main, and reflective, and game. The result of the study requires further research on material development, particularly on the creation of further material and audio developments.
This study explores the strategies in boosting students' engagement through online course application. By using a qualitative design, it examined the posting of students' comments toward the materials, instructor's instructions, students' assignments, and all the activities in Canvas. The finding shows that online course application is one of the media that can boost the students' engagement through some features and services provided. However, the role of the online instructor cannot be ignored in boosting students' engagement. The instructor controls all the activities during the course. Moreover, there are some strategies provided by the instructor. The first is building good interaction between the instructor and the students. Next is elaborating and exploring the students' ideas through assignments. Then, providing the materials and assignments are relevant to the real-life situation and technology development. Next is applying the usage of technology and multimedia in the learning process in accordance with online course application. Another strategy is giving different and challenging instruction to avoid flatness. The last is preparing an authentic assessment by providing a discussion or assessment rubric. In short, the online course application is a medium to support the learning process by providing several features that are in accordance with the materials and the strategies used by the instructor. The features available in the application and the instructor are the keys to success in boosting students' engagement.
This research aims to explore the types of compliment response strategies used by the female English learners at Darul Lughah wal Karomah Islamic boarding school. It also analyses the relationship between the speaker of the language and the society. It is conducted before the pandemic of covid19. Therefore, it has different result according to the current situation. This research used descriptive qualitative research design. There were 10 female English learners selected for this research. The finding of the research shows that the most dominant used is Ignore types. The result of the interview explained that the society of the research's participant can be determined from how they respond to the compliment in their class. It is found that the female English learner has different response regarding the compliment that they receive. This research done before the pandemic of covid-19, therefore this research draws the activities of school in offline mode. Conducting a research in the current situation might draw different result than this research.
