Abstract:-The descriptive study seeks to explore the digital divide between male and female students of University of Barisal, Bangladesh. The term digital divide is conceptualized in three aspects-access to, usage and ability to use ICTs. A total of 300 students were participated in this study where 150 were male and 150 were female. The field data show that though there are no significant differences in access to and usages of ICTs but there is a notable gender gap in ability of ICTs'usage (Smart Phone and Laptop/desktop). Female students are less efficient in downloading and installing software from internet. Moreover, they are not able to solve the virus related problems and aren't as competent in using MS word, excel and power point as male students are. The main reasons of this gender gap are mental dependency and less learning curiosity of female students in ICT sector.
Previous literature suggests that tea garden workers of Bangladesh are excluded from social, political and economic aspects. Therefore, this research work aimed to exploring the process of social exclusion of tea garden worker. All the tea gardens within Sylhet City Corporation have been selected as the study area and empirical data has been collected from selected respondents by Survey and In-depth interview methods. The field data show that tea garden workers are excluded in main three ways. They are deprived from social and political rights and have a very small control on their material world. Such deprivations made them incapable and create a cycle of poverty which leads them to social exclusion. Moreover, tea garden owners and managers play a peculiar role to exploit them from their basic socio-political and economic rights. In such a way, tea garden workers become excluded from the main stream people and living inhuman life.
Rohingya refugees came into a massive influx in Bangladesh in 2017 and overwhelmed the camp areas with myriads of problems especially degrading environment and creating social chaos. This study seeks to understand the perception of local people about Rohingya refugees regarding the impacts of refugees on the host community from both environmental and social perspectives. The study finds that in the initial period of the refugee influx, local people showed their sympathy and provided support to help these forced migrants. However, the perception of local people started to change over time as they believed that because of the massive influx of refugees, the host environment lost a thousand acres of forest, more than half of the total hill lands, and vast biodiversity. Moreover, due to the establishment of refugee camps, the host communities face several social problems like theft, robbery, hijacking, teasing, violence, smuggling, etc. The long presence of refugees in an area with scarce resources brings social tensions and competition that may turn into social conflict if there is a lack of proper surveillance and policies from respective authorities.
