Abstract. We associate with each graph (S, E) a 2-step simply connected nilpotent Lie group N and a lattice Γ in N . We determine the group of Lie automorphisms of N and apply the result to describe a necessary and sufficient condition, in terms of the graph, for the compact nilmanifold N/Γ to admit an Anosov automorphism. Using the criterion we obtain new examples of compact nilmanifolds admitting Anosov automorphisms, and conclude that for every n ≥ 17 there exist a n-dimensional 2-step simply connected nilpotent Lie group N which is indecomposable (not a direct product of lower dimensional nilpotent Lie groups), and a lattice Γ in N such that N/Γ admits an Anosov automorphism; we give also a lower bound on the number of mutually nonisomorphic Lie groups N of a given dimension, satisfying the condition. Necessary and sufficient conditions are also described for a compact nilmanifold as above to admit ergodic automorphisms.
We construct new families of examples of (real) Anosov Lie algebras starting with algebraic units. We also give examples of indecomposable Anosov Lie algebras (not a direct sum of proper Lie ideals) of dimension 13 and 16, and we conclude that for every n ≥ 6 with n = 7 there exists an indecomposable Anosov Lie algebra of dimension n.
We consider a method popular in the literature of associating a two-step nilpotent Lie algebra with a finite simple graph. We prove that the two-step nilpotent Lie algebras associated with two graphs are Lie isomorphic if and only if the graphs from which they arise are isomorphic.

Dani and Mainkar introduced a method for constructing a 2-step nilpotent Lie algebra n G from a simple directed graph G in 2005. There is a natural inner product on n G arising from the construction. We study geometric properties of the associated simply connected 2-step nilpotent Lie group N with Lie algebra n G . We classify singularity properties of the Lie algebra n G in terms of the graph G. A comprehensive description is given of graphs G which give rise to Heisenberg-like Lie algebras. Conditions are given on the graph G and on a lattice Γ ⊆ N for which the quotient Γ \ N , a compact nilmanifold, has a dense set of smoothly closed geodesics.MSC 2010: Primary: 22E25; Secondary: 53C30, 53C22.
