Introduction: HPV (Human papilloma virus) is the most common sexually transmitted infection and constitutes an important part of cancers for which infectious agents are blamed in its ethology. The most important duty of informing the public about HPV and the HPV vaccine with a high protection rate belongs to doctors. The curriculum and scope of this subject in medical education in our country is uncertain. We aimed to determine the knowledge, attitudes, and behaviours of our students about HPV and the HPV vaccine before the internship and to find out the change in their knowledge, attitudes, and behaviour status after the internship. Method: The population of the study consists of a total of 257 third and sixth grade students studying in the Faculty of Medicine at Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University during the 2018-2019 academic year. A questionnaire, including questions and suggestions about sociodemographic characteristics, and knowledge, attitudes and behavioural status about HPV infection and the HPV vaccine, was administered under supervision to third and sixth grade students between April and June 2019 without specifying their name and surname. Chi-square test was used for statistical evaluation. For statistical significance, p <0.050 was accepted. Results: 108 third grade and 91 sixth grade students participated in our study. Although HPV is known to play a role in the ethology of cervical cancer and anogenital warts (91%, 91.2%), this awareness was as low as 35.4%, 37.9% and 38.8%, respectively, in penis, anus and head and neck cancers. The knowledge level was statistically significant in favour of the sixth-grade students (p <0.001). When the attitudes and behaviours of the students were examined, the frequency of having the HPV vaccine was 4.5%. It was observed that the frequency of the idea of vaccination among the female students was higher than that of the male students (61.3%, 18.1%). No statistically significant difference was found among the possible variables that could affect the need for the HPV vaccine when compared according to the gender, grade, and the educational status of the mother or father (p> 0.05). The reason why the students did not have the HPV vaccine was related to the fact that they found the vaccine expensive and did not consider it necessary. Only 46.7% of the sixth-grade students thought that they could give their patients enough information about the HPV virus and vaccine when they graduated. Conclusion:The frequency of vaccination in our country is very low even among doctors. Training strategies should be developed to enable doctors to graduate with full knowledge of HPV and the HPV vaccine with multidimensional training programs.
Background: Premature ovarian failure is among the most important side effects of chemotherapy during reproductive period. Preserving ovarian function is gradually gaining importance during oncologic treatment. The present study aims to investigate the potential of melatonin to protect from cisplatin-induced ovarian toxicity in rats.Methods: Twenty-nine female rats were divided to three groups: Saline control group (group 1), cisplatin group (group 2), and cisplatin and melatonin group (group 3). While the rats in groups 2 and 3 were administered 5 mg/kg single dose of cisplatin via intra-peritoneal (IP) route, the rats in group 3 were started on melatonin (20 mg/kg IP) before cisplatin administration and continued during 3 consecutive days. Ovaries were removed one week after cisplatin administration in all groups. Blood samples were obtained before the rats were decapitated. Histological evaluation, follicle count, and classification were performed. TAp63 mRNA expression was evaluated using mRNA extraction and real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) method. Serum estradiol (E2) and anti-Mullerian hormone (AMH) values were measured with enzyme immune-assay technology.Results: While primordial follicles were seen to decrease in group 2 as compared to group 1 (p=0.023), primordial follicle count was observed to be preserved significantly in melatonin group as compared to group 2 (p=0.047). Moreover, cisplatin-induced histo-pathological morphology was preserved in favor of normal histology in melatonin group. A significant difference was not observed between groups with regard to mean serum AMH and E2 values (p=0.102 and p=0.411, respectively). While TAp63 gene expression significantly increased in group 2 as compared to control group (p=0.001), we did not detect a statistically significant difference in cisplatin and melatonin group, although gene expression decreased (p=0.34).Conclusions: We conclude that concurrent administration of melatonin and cisplatin may protect from ovarian damage.
Background: The definition of abortion was made by the World Health Organization based on the weight of the pregnancy material or the duration of pregnancy. According to this expression, the expulsion of all or some of the pregnancy material weighing less than 500 grams or before the 20th week of pregnancy from the uterine cavity is called abortion. Platelet-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) and neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), which are among the inflammation parameters likely to be increased in abortion, were compared in groups that resulted in abortion and did not result in abortion.Methods: The study included 120 patients who had a diagnosis of <14 weeks of abortion and 120 healthy pregnant women who applied to the gynecology and obstetrics clinic of a tertiary care hospital between January 2018 and December 2021. Those who had a previous fetal heartbeat or intracavitary pregnancy and aborted before the 14th gestational week were included in the selection of the abortus group.Results: NLR and PLR were analyzed with ROC curve analysis. The area under the curve (AUC) for NLR was 0.498, with 95% confidence intervals (0.424-0.572), and was not statistically significant (p=0.38). The area under the curve (AUC) for PLR was 0.480 at 95% confidence intervals (0.406-0.557), and was not statistically significant (p=0.38).Conclusions: NLR and PLR ratios were similar in both groups. As a result of the present study, it was found that there were no significant differences between the abortion NLR and PLR values between the groups (p>0.05).

Pregnancy‐associated atypical haemolytic uraemic syndrome is a rare and potentially lethal complement-mediated disorder. It can mimic preeclampsia, gestational hypertension, thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura and hemolysis, elevated liver enzymes and low platelets syndrome. Thus, it can be hard to distinguish pregnancy‐associated atypical haemolytic uraemic syndrome from other causes in peri/post-partum women presenting with features of microangiopathic haemolytic anemia, thrombocytopenia and acute kidney injury. We present a case of a 35-year-old woman in her third pregnancy at 32 weeks’ gestation who underwent caesarean section due to fetal distress. She developed severe renal impairment, thrombocytopenia and neurologic symptoms within 24 hours after delivery. A diagnosis of pregnancy‐associated atypical haemolytic uraemic syndrome was provided, and treatment with plasma therapy followed by eculizumab was initiated. A rapid improvement of both clinical and laboratory parameters was observed. This case demonstrates the significance of early initiation of anti-complement therapy to prevent irreversible renal damage and possible death in women with pregnancy‐associated atypical haemolytic uraemic syndrome.
