The point load test is an effective and rapid way to predict rock strength. Regarding the investigation of point load strength and the failure characteristics of rock, the point load test’s advantages and application scopes are introduced in this paper. According to the three main components—the rock itself, the size effect, and the loading cross-sectional area—the point load strength’s influencing factors and mechanisms on rock failure were analyzed, followed by expounding the significant effect of the technology of the point load test on evaluating engineering safety and stability. Based on previous scholars’ research results, there is a strong correlation between the point load strength and the uniaxial compressive strength. The parameters of the rocks from different regions and different sediments were summarized via substantial field and indoor testing. The functional relationship (mainly including the linear function, quadratic function, exponential function, power function, and logarithmic function) between the point load strength and the uniaxial compressive strength was obtained by mathematical statistical analysis. Finally, the challenges regarding the point load test were discussed, and accordingly, suggestions for future research were provided.
The No. 2 conduit of the Xiaopu Tunnel in the Yuxi section of central Yunnan’s water diversion project is taken as the research object, starting from the geological conditions along with the characteristics, formation mechanism and evolutionary model of dolomite sanding. This paper discusses the engineering problems of the project’s tunnels with dolomite sanding in the water-rich section, and its corresponding engineering reinforcement plan. It was found that in the tunnel section with normal level of dolomite sanding, there was no water seepage, where measures such as advanced small conduit, mechanical excavation, short grubbing and strong support could all be adopted for safe passage. Even in the water seepage section of the weak dolomite sanding tunnel, the surrounding rock was found in close interlock with strong self-stability. The excavation and support were implemented according to the category of normal surrounding rock. In the water-rich sections with strong and intense dolomite sanding, gushing of water and sand were quite frequent, with developed fissures, broken rock masses and rich waters. During the engineering operation, phosphoric acid and sodium silicate slurry in addition to urea formaldehyde resin and oxalic acid slurry plus Malisan and liquid catalyst slurry were first prepared for water plugging. Then, pure water slurry was used for surrounding rock reinforcement, which exerted an excellent effect. This method can provide reference for reinforcing tunnels of sandy dolomite in other areas of projects.
The sericite schist is a typical metamorphic soft rock. Large deformation of surrounding rock often occurs in the construction of a tunnel in this stratum. Due to the broken rock mass structure and poor mechanical strength in Baishitou tunnel project of Dalin line of Southwest railway, it is impossible to prepare standard samples for a traditional rock mechanical test. Therefore, we chose penetrometer (SH-70) for an in situ test. Firstly, we monitored the deformation of typical sections and analyzed the characteristics of large deformation of soft rock in the tunnel. Secondly, we tested the needle penetration index of fresh excavation face and side wall. Then, we estimated some mechanical parameters of sericite schist by a needle penetrometer and Hoek-brown criterion and discussed the acquisition of mechanical parameters of soft rock. The results show the following: (1) the characteristics of extrusion rock tunnel are summarized as large deformation, fast deformation rate, and obvious construction disturbance. (2) The reference value of penetration index of sericite schist (the vertical joint direction) is 3.90~7.77 N/mm, and the parallel joint direction is 1.27~2.99 N/mm. (3) The uniaxial compressive strength estimated by a penetrometer is 0.78~8.53 MPa, and the strength of the surrounding rock is negatively correlated with the amount of deformation. Therefore, it can be considered that the insufficient strength of surrounding rock is the fundamental reason for large deformation. (4) The reference value of cohesion of sericite schist estimated by a penetrometer is 0.203 MPa, and the reference value of internal friction angle is 18.224°. Compared with the common estimation methods, the penetrometer is more convenient and economical, which can provide a new idea for obtaining the mechanical parameters of sericite schist soft rock tunnel.
The red sandstone of Xiaopu 3# branch Cave in Yuxi section of the Central Yunnan Water Diversion Project was taken as the research object. The uniaxial compression strength and point load strength test are conducted from the perspectives of vertical and parallel stratifications, respectively, and then the anisotropy of red sandstone was analyzed in detail. The data obtained from field and laborator test was analyzed, and the conversion relationship between point load strength index and uniaxial compression strength is power function under both parallel stratification and vertical stratification. The study results showed that: The mechanical properties of red sandstone has obvious anisotropy. The difference in its mechanical properties is particularly evident in UCS and point load tests, and Is(50) and UCS under vertical stratification is significantly greater than Is(50) under parallel stratification. The point load strength correction index m of red sandstone is m = 0.4096 under parallel stratification, and m = 0.4408 under vertical stratification.
