Abstract. This paper deals with the frequent use of modal auxiliary verbs in Corpus of Contemporary of American English (COCA). The modal auxiliary modal verbs mentioned as the data are can, could, will, would, may, might, shall, should, and must. Each data collected are taken from Corpus of Contemporary of American English (COCA) in https://corpus.byu.edu/coca/. The research method is descriptive analysis; the present writers describe every data related to their function in each clause. The uses of corpus-based findings of this study have shown several valuable insights. Firstly, the frequency and ranked order of modal auxiliary verbs found in the Corpus of Contemporary American English (COCA) has been revealed. From the nine modal auxiliary verbs that classified into ‘central modals’, it is collected 6,008,840 data. From the total number mentioned, the verb would (1,301,269) is the most frequently used, then it is followed by the verb can (1,228,608), will (1,118,515), could (885,835), may (494,144), should (435,903), might (300,258), must (223,936), and shall (20,372). Secondly, this study has revealed the elements following each of modal auxiliry verbs found in the Corpus of Contemporary American English (COCA). This is the important information on the use of modal auxiliary verbs and their structure in real language.Abstrak. Tulisan ini mengenai frekwensi penggunaan verba bantu modal pada Corpus of Contemporary of American English (COCA). Verba bantu modal yang digunakan sebagai data adalah can, could, will, would, may, might, shall, should, dan must. Setiap data yang digunakan, dikumpulan dari pada Corpus of Contemporary of American English (COCA) pada https://corpus.byu.edu/coca/. Metode penelitian yang digunakan di dalam riset ini adalah metode deskriptif; para peneliti menggambarkan setiap data yang berhubungan dengan fungsi pada setiap klausa. Penggunaan korpus di dalam penelitian ini menunjukkan beberapa hal. Pertama, menggambarkan frekwensi dan urutan penggunaan verba bantu modal di dalam Corpus of Contemporary of American English (COCA). Dari sembilan verba bantu modal yang dikelompokkan ke dalam ‘central modals’ terkumpul 6.008.840 data. Dari keseluruhan data yang terkumpul, verba bantu would (1,301,269) sebagai verba bantu yang paling sering digunakan, diikuti oleh verba bantu modal can (1,228,608), will (1,118,515), could (885,835), may (494,144), should (435,903), might (300,258), must (223,936), dan shall (20,372). Kedua, tulisan ini juga mendeskripsikan unsur-unsur yang mengikuti verba bantu modal yang digunakan di dalam Corpus of Contemporary of American English (COCA). Hal ini merupakan informasi penting mengenai penggunaan verba bantu modal dan strukturnya di dalam pengunaan bahasa yang sebenarnya.
Everybody either a child or an adult, likes playing. Playing is a fun activity. For children, watching movies is one of the fun activities. Learning languages can also be a fun activity by using language play. Language play can help the children in enhancing their ability in improving their vocabularies. In children movies, we usually found language play. The language play forms in children movies can be found both phonologically and morphologically forms. This article tries to explore the language play forms through children movies to support the children ability in enhancing their English vocabularies.
Recently, “coronavirus” is viral since the outbreak firstly reported in Wuhan and today become a pandemic. The writers found the word “coronavirus” in News on the Web (NOW) corpus in a huge number. This research applied mixed-method in which quantitative and qualitative approaches are combined to provide a more complete understanding of the research. The objectives of the research are firstly, to portray the distribution and the time line of the word “coronavirus” in NOW corpus, and to identify the pair of the word “coronavirus” in NOW corpus. Based on the analysis of the data, firstly, it was reported on April 27, 2020 many countries, including Australia, New Zealand, Iran, and Spain did coronavirus lockdown to slower the growing number of coronavirus infected people and the number of the word “coronavirus” in NOW corpus increased significantly from 16,073 to 64,100 times. Secondly, it was found that the compound words containing the word “coronavirus” related to health terminologies: the compound words containing two words as nouns, the compound words containing three words as nouns, the compound words containing three words as an adjective and two nouns, compound words containing four words as nouns, and the compound words containing four words as an adjective and three nouns.
This study is entitled "Analysis of Translation Methods and Techniques in the Novel Curse of the Wendigo by Rick Yancey. Study: Translation ". The data source used is a novel titled the Curse of the Wendigo by Rick Yancey. The objectives of this research are to (1) identify the translation method used in the translation of the novel The Curse of the Wendigo by Rick Yancey. (2) identify the types of translation techniques used in the translation of Rick Yancey's novel The Curse of the Wendigo. (3) identify the relationship between the translation methods and techniques used in the translation of Rick Yancey's novel The Curse of the Wendigo. The method used in this research is a qualitative descriptive approach. The theoretical basis of this research is the theory of the Newmark translation method (1988) and the Molina & Albir (2002) translation techniques. The results of this study indicate that there are: (1) seven translation methods used, namely literal (3.2%), faithful (3.2%), semantic (45.2%), adaptation (3.2%) ), idiomatic (3.2%), free (9.7%), and communicative (32.3%). (2) 17 translation techniques used are adaptation (1.2%), amplification (2.4%), borrowing (3.5%), calculating (2.4%), compensation (1.2%), description (2.4%), prevalent equivalent (3.5%), generalization (2.4%), linguistic amplification (9.4%), linguistic compression (17.6%), literal (20%), modulation ( 7.1%), particularization (2.4%), reduction (1.2%), substitution (1.2%), variation (3.5%), and transposition (18.8%). (3) six of the seven translation methods related to the translation technique used.
