The language used in the advertisement can reflect social and cultural perspectives. Specific words and sentences used by the cosmetic company can attract the consumer's desire to buy and consume a product. The language can also change someone's perspective about life and lead them to experience new knowledge of life. The cosmetic product has changed woman's perspective toward the standard of beauty. The beauty standard is submitted through the persuasive language and the display of a beautiful model in the advertisement. It is a common issue that the concept of being a beautiful woman is to have white and glowing skin. Because of this, women buy and use many whitening products to beautify themselves. The language of advertisement 'colonizes' woman and kills the concept of a woman's nature. It subordinates some women who keep their natural look by not using any whitening products. However, a woman should be aware of this problem, which is not to be affected by the language of the advertisement so that they can accept themselves for who they are. Feminist CDA helps this research to analyze and criticize the beauty standard that has been put to women through the language. In the end, woman's awareness is needed to resist gender-stereotype, the beauty standard, constructed by society.
This study aims to describe women's resistance from a gender and social perspective in the novel Women by Maman Suherman. This qualitative research focuses on the postfeminism theory of Rosalind Gill and Christina Scharff. The results of the research show that institutions and values in modern society are seen as weak and old-fashioned because they are still based on women's gender identity; regulate the behavior of women to be accepted in society. Women's revenge through education and calm attitude is then interpreted as a response, reaction, and resistance to obtain equality in humanity.
Reading is therapeutic. This statement reflects reading as a technique to heal people’s mental problems and increase self-ability. Researches prove that reading is not only for entertainment, but also a tool to solve problem in people’s life. Meanwhile, the question comes up in the term of what kind of book suggested to read. In Luis Sepulveda’s The Old Man Who Read Love Stories, it is implied that reading fiction helps the old man, Antonio, to deal with his old age and loneliness. Reading a love story enlightens the old man’s mind and feelings. Life is overloaded by complex problems, such as war, poverty, gender problem, and nature destruction. People become sentimental to life; there is no happy ending story in life, only death. Meanwhile, Sepulveda sees fiction as the rescuer for a problematic life. This paper will discuss why people read fiction and the effects of reading fiction for someone’s life. The positive impacts of reading fiction for mental health and self-transformation are supposed to encourage people to start a new habit of reading for a better life.
This paper aims to analyze Portia‟s resistance toward social construction of womanhood. Portia's subjectivity is constructed by mother-daughter's unity that stimulates Portia's dependency on her mother's figure. Since she becomes a lacking subject of knowledge and experience toward social life, she is supposed to separate herself from maternal attachment and to shift her life to the symbolic father in order to be an autonomous figure. Meanwhile, the symbolic father sets symbolic language that is the language used by society that constructs feminine identity for the daughter and triggers forbidden pleasure. Thus to resist the social construction of womanhood, sisterhood is needed. Inter-subjective dialogue between women helps them to escape from male‟s dictation or oppression. It does not only provide the experience of nurturance but also ability to control and manage their own identity.
ABSTRACT
While talking about Asian literature, some confusing points need to be discussed. There are some styles of Asian writing found in the literature market; Asian literature that arrives with the English-translation model, one that has been already written in English by the Asian authors, and one written by a Western author. Asian literature covers works of writing produced by Asians in a variety of countries in Asia. The development of this literature is supported by the use of the English language in form of translation, and the emergence of English authors who write about Asian culture. For the growth of Asian Literature’s styles, this paper attempts to analyze three different styles of Asian novels; English-language novel, English-translation novel, and Western-author novel to define and classify it. The investigation of the theme; Asian resistance toward colonialism and Asian critique toward Western culture will be conducted under the scope ofOrientalism. The discussion of the nature of language and culture in Asian writing will justify the definition and classification of Asian literature as well. Subsequently, this paper detects Asian Literature as a work that must be written by Asian authors, thus it can strongly declare the real root ofAsian culture, tradition, value, belief, and feeling. It should be classified as works by native Asian authors and English-translation works as well.
